Box Score WHEELING – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats just didn't have enough fire power to keep up with the first place Wheeling Jesuit Lady Cardinals here today at the McDonough Center in a Mountain East Conference clash.
Wheeling Jesuit is the top defensive team in the MEC, allowing just 59 points per game.
They were on point today as they defeated the Lady Bobcats by an 89-54 score.
Wesleyan shot the ball at just a 33.3 percent clip, making 19 of their 57 field goal attempts.
The Lady 'Cats placed just two scorers in double digits as Mari Stewart scored 14 points while Tara Goldman tallied 11.
Down 3-0, Goldman made a three-pointer, and after a Wheeling Jesuit basket, Allie Browne unleashed a three-pointer to give Wesleyan a 6-5 lead with 6:46 left in the opening quarter.
With Wheeling Jesuit leading 13-11, Stewart fired in a trey to return the lead to Wesleyan at 14-13, with 1:13 showing on the first-quarter clock.
Wheeling Jesuit ran off the final five points of the quarter to take an 18-14 lead.
Wheeling Jesuit scored the first six points of the second quarter for a 24-14 advantage.
The Lady Cardinals pushed their lead to 15 at the break, at 39-24.
Wheeling Jesuit outscored Wesleyan in the third-quarter by a 28-16 margin to take a 60-37 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
The fourth quarter was more of the same as Wheeling Jesuit outscored Wesleyan by a 22-14 margin.
The loss was the third in a row for the Lady 'Cats as they dropped their record to 6-18 and 4-16 in the MEC.
Wheeling Jesuit improved to 23-3 overall and 18-2 in the MEC.
Wesleyan will return to action this Thursday when they host Shepherd at 5:30 p.m. in a conference outing.
