Box Score BUCKHANNON – It was the same old story for the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats in their Mountain East Conference contest against the Shepherd University Rams tonight in Rockefeller Center.
Three good quarters was wiped out by one bad quarter for the Lady 'Cats as they dropped an 89-83 decision.
Wesleyan was down by just one at the halftime and outscored Shepherd by nine in the fourth quarter, but they were outscored by a 32-18 margin in the third quarter which was the difference in the game.
The loss dropped the Lady Bobcats to 6-19 overall and 4-17 in the MEC.
Brooke Richard and Stacy Remer both made lay-ups to stake Wesleyan to a quick 4-0 lead after 30 seconds of action.
Shepherd pulled ahead by an 8-7 score but Remer unleashed a three-pointer to return the lead to Wesleyan, at 10-8, with 2:36 ticked off the clock.
An Adrian Cunningham basket kept Wesleyan ahead by one, at 14-13, with 5:32 gone in the first quarter.
Shepherd scored the next eight points to take a 21-14 lead before Stewart flipped in two free throws to end the run and make it a 21-16 game with 2:09 remaining in the first quarter.
Following a Shepherd basket, Rachel Vandertoolen made a free throw and Allie Browne (pictured) fired in a three-pointer to make it a 23-20 contest after 10 minutes of action.
With Shepherd up by a 30-27 score, Wesleyan reeled off the next eight points as Remer made a jumper, Vandertoolen went inside for a lay-up, Mari Stewart popped in an eight-footer and then nailed two free throws as Wesleyan took a 35-30 advantage with 2:33 left in the half.
Shepherd ended the half on a 10-4 run to take a 40-39 lead at the break.
The third quarter started off well enough for the Lady Bobcats as a Browne three-pointer gave them a 50-48 lead with 2:47 gone in the stanza.
Shepherd though went on a 14-0 run over the next four minutes before Remer made a free throw to make it a 62-51 contest with 4:13 showing on the third-quarter clock.
Shepherd pushed their lead to the biggest of the game at 19 points, at 72-53, with 1:13 left in the quarter.
Wesleyan closed the quarter on a 4-0 run on when Richard connected with a jumper and Stewart hit two free throws to make it a 72-57 game heading into the fourth quarter.
With Shepherd leading by 16, at 78-62, with 1:45 ticked off the fourth-quarter clock, Wesleyan went on a 10-0 run to get back into the game.
Remer made a basket, Cunningham hit a free throw, Vandertoolen knocked down two foul shots, Cunningham and Vandertoolen both made jumpers and Remer sank a free throw during the run.
That made it a 78-72 contest with 4:48 remaining in the game.
Shepherd countered with a 9-3 run for an 87-75 lead with 1:41 left in the game
Wesleyan ended the game with an 8-2 run but ran out of time as they dropped the game by six points.
Two Lady Bobcats had double-doubles in the game.
Remer scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while Stewart had 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Browne added 15 points and eight assists while Cunningham scored 14 and Vandertoolen came off the bench to score 13.
Wesleyan outrebounded Shepherd by a 37-35 margin.
The Lady Bobcats will wrap up their regular season Saturday at home when they face Glenville State.
The game will tip-off at 2 p.m.
