Box Score URBANA (Ohio) – The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat basketball team put three players in double digits, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Urbana Blue Knights in the first round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament tonight at the Grimes Center.
Allie Browne scored 20 points, Mari Stewart tallied 18 and Adrian Cunningham poured in 10 points, but the Lady Bobcats' season came to an end in an 81-69 setback.
Head coach Mike Bari and his team finished the year with a 7-20 season.
Wesleyan was down 7-1 before Stacy Remer made the Lady 'Cats first field goal, a three-pointer at the 6:19 mark.
Urbana scored the next seven points to take a 14-4 lead before Stewart hit a free throw to end the run.
Down 19-8, Wesleyan's Catherine Bandak and Brooke Richard each made jumpers as the Lady Bobcats closed the gap to 19-12 heading into the second quarter.
Urbana scored the first basket of the second quarter for a nine-point lead, but Cunningham hit a 10-footer and Rachel Vandertoolen scored from the paint to bring Wesleyan to within five with two minutes gone.
Wesleyan could never get any closer than five points in the second quarter as Urbana outscored them by a 24-16 margin the rest of the half to take a 45-32 lead into the intermission.
Urbana built their biggest lead of the game, at 22 points, at the 4:47 mark of the third quarter as they were up by a 58-36 score.
Wesleyan whittled the lead down to 15 after Browne made a jumper and Stewart canned a three-pointer to make it a 62-47 game heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
A Browne three-pointer shrunk the lead to 12, at 65-53, with two minutes gone in the quarter, but Urbana ran off the next seven points to take a 72-53 advantage.
Wesleyan outscored Urbana in the final five minutes of the game by a 16-9 margin, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Urbana lead.
Following the trio of scorers for Wesleyan was Richard and Vandertoolen with seven points apiece and Stacy Remer with five.
Urbana will now face Notre Dame in the quarter-finals of the MEC Tournament Thursday at 2:15 p.m. in the Charleston Civic Center.
