Wesleyan Pounds Notre Dame For Two More WIns

BUCKHANNON – The 12th-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan softball team had little trouble disposing of the Notre Dame College Falcons here today at Culpepper Field in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader.

With both games only going five innings, Wesleyan took game one by a 10-0 score and won the second outing by a 9-0 score.

The two wins improved Wesleyan to 25-3 overall and 7-1 in conference play.

It was also the 12th and 13th shutouts of the year for the Wesleyan pitching staff.

In game one, Wesleyan put the contest away early as they scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Olivia Gore had a two-run double, Rebekah Honce had a one-run single and Krista Waggoner hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored a run.

Wesleyan used the long ball for a five-run second inning.

Brooklyn Waddell hit a two-run home run, Honce hit another two-run home run and Morgan Bruce smacked a one-run double to give Wesleyan a 9-0 lead.

Ashley Hurey knocked home Gore with on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the fourth to wrap up the scoring.

Honce was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate while Gore collected two hits.

Hannah Vet went the distance to improve her record to 9-2.

She allowed just two hits and struck out four.

In the second game, Wesleyan did all of their scoring in the first two innings.

They scored six runs in the bottom of the first.

Gore had a one-run single, Waggoner had a one-run single and Carly Gregory had the big hit of the inning, a three-run home that scored Waggoner and Honce.

Wesleyan chased across three runs in the bottom of the second.

Eggleston had a one-run double, Waddell had a one-run double and Honce had a sacrifice fly.

Wesleyan collected nine hits with Tori Pogue, Anna Eggleston and Gore each getting two.

Sayaka Foley improved her record to 8-1 as she twirled all five innings.

She allowed six hits and struck out five.

Wesleyan will return to action Saturday as they are set to face Urbana in a league doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
