Urbana Gives Wesleyan A Scare, But Lady 'Cats Win Two

BUCKHANNON – The Urbana Blue Knights gave the 12th-ranked West Virginia more than they wanted here today in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at Culpepper Field.

Urbana came into the game with just one win and 10 active players on the roster, but they pushed Wesleyan to the limit in game two as the Lady 'Cats survived the potential huge upset as they pulled out a 7-5 decision.

Wesleyan won game one by a 10-2 score in six innings.

It was the fifth and sixth wins in a row for the Lady Bobcats as they upped their record to 27-3 overall and 9-1 in the MEC.

Wesleyan scored first in the bottom of the first when Brooklyn Waddell hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Tori Pogue.

The Lady Bobcats used the long ball in the second inning.

Krista Waggoner hit a two-run home run and Sara Scoone hit a solo home run to give Wesleyan a 4-0 lead.

Urbana scored a run in the top of the third but Wesleyan matched that run when Rebekah Honce scored Waddell on a ground out to make it a make it a 5-1 game.

With the bases loaded, Waddell hit a ball that was misplayed by the Urbana shortstop that emptied the bases to gave Wesleyan an 8-1 advantage.

A sacrifice fly by Urbana in the top of the fifth inning made it an 8-2 game.

Waddell ended the game on the mercy rule in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-run double.

Wesleyan had 10 hits in the contest with Pogue, Waddell and Waggoner each had two hits apiece.

Hannah Vet improved her record to 10-1 as she went five innings.

She gave up two earned runs on eight hits and fanned two.

Sayaka Foley threw a scoreless sixth inning striking out three.

In the second game, Anna Eggleston smacked a solo home run in the bottom of the third to give Wesleyan a 1-0 lead.

Ashley Hurey had a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth to up the Lady Bobcat lead to 3-0.

Olivia Gore and Carly Gregory each had a one-run single in the bottom of the fifth to give Wesleyan a 5-0 advantage.

That is when the game took a 180 turn for Wesleyan as they allowed Urbana to score five runs in the top of the sixth inning. Urbana hit two home runs in the inning as they deadlocked the game at 5-5.

Wesleyan went back ahead in the bottom of the sixth when Waddell and Honce each had one-run doubles.

Katelyn Edwards hit a lead-off double in the top of the seventh, but Foley retired the next three batters in order to preserve the win.

Wesleyan smashed out 14 hits with Waddell and Gregory each getting three hits apiece.

Foley (9-1) picked up the win in relief.

She went 1 1/3 innings and allowed one earned run on two hits.

Following the conclusion of the second game, Gregory received a marriage proposal at home plate from her boyfriend and former Bobcat baseball player Matthew Lorusso.

She said yes as her teammates cheered from the circle.

Wesleyan will return to action this Wednesday when they visit Shepherd in a MEC doubleheader.

The first pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
