Winning Streak at 10 Now for Softball Lady Bobcats

BUCKHANNON – The 16th-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan softball team held off an upset bid by the West Virginia State Lady Yellow Jackets in game one of their Mountain East Conference doubleheader today at Culpepper Field.

The Lady Yellow Jackets raced out a 7-2 lead after two innings, but Wesleyan rallied for an 8-7 victory.

Things were easier for the Lady 'Cats in game two as they won a 6-1 decision.

Wesleyan's winning streak is now at 10 games after the doubleheader sweep.

They currently own a 39-5 overall record and a 21-3 MEC mark.

Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Brooklyn Waddell doubled home Tori Pogue and then later scored on an error.

West Virginia State erupted for seven runs in the top of the second, but only one run was earned.

Wesleyan started to chip away at the five-run West Virginia State lead.

Wesleyan closed the gap to 7-5 in the bottom of the fourth when Morgan Bruce hit a solo home and Waddell hit a two-run double.

The Lady Bobcats took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with three runs.

Bruce had a one-run single, Carly Gregory scored on an error and Taylor Barnett had a one-run single.

West Virginia State threatened in the seventh inning putting runners at first and second, but Wesleyan starting pitcher Hannah Vet got Allyson Funk to fly to center field for the final out.

Wesleyan collected nine hits with Waddell getting three and Bruce getting two.

Vet improved her record to 15-2 throwing a complete game.

She allowed just one earned run on seven hits while striking out two.

In game two, Ashley Hurey (pictured) treated Wesleyan to a 2-0 lead with a two-run single.

West Virginia State made it a 2-1 game in the top of the third, but Wesleyan countered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third when Krista Waggoner had a one-run single and Gregory hit a sacrifice fly that scored Rebekah Honce.

Waddell iced the game in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run.

Hurey and Waggoner lead the offense with two hits apiece.

Sayaka Foley picked up the win in a complete-game effort to up her record to 15-2.

She gave up nine hits but allowed just the one earned run while fanning five.

Wesleyan will return to action tomorrow as they host the University of Charleston in a huge MEC doubleheader.

Both teams are currently tied for first place in the MEC South Division.

First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
