Bobcats Split A Pair of Games with Concord

BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan baseball team won their eighth game in a row in dramatic fashion in game one against the Concord Mt. Lions in a MEC doubleheader today at Hank Ellis Field.

The 'Cats had a walk-off single from James Fraser to win the contest by a 5-4 score.

Unfortunately for the 'Cats, the winning streak came to an end in game two as Wesleyan dropped a 7-6 decision after leading by a 6-2 score after seven innings.

The split left coach Brett Ripley's squad with a 17-15 record overall and a 9-9 mark in the MEC.

In the opener, Concord scored a run in the top of the first but Wesleyan tied it in their half of the first when Fraser hit a sacrifice fly that scored Nick Jones.

Nick Bader doubled home Corey Lynn in the bottom of the second to give Wesleyan a 2-1 advantage.

Concord recaptured the lead with a pair of runs in the top of third.

Wesleyan took the lead right back with a two runs in the bottom of the fourth when Bader singled home Michael Logsdon and Dominic Castello brought home Lynn on a fielder's choice.

That made it a 4-3 game.

Concord tied it in the top of the seventh with an unearned run.

The bottom of the seventh inning started with Bader getting a single and moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Castello.

Smith reached on an error that allowed Bader to move to third.

Smith was picked off for the second out, but Nick Jones was hit by a pitch.

That led to Jones ripping a single that scored Bader for the game-winner.

Wesleyan had eight hits in the contest with Bader going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate.

Chris Metrick earned the win pitching one inning of relief.

In the second game, after Concord scored a run in the top of the first, Wesleyan pushed across three runs in their half of the inning on a two-run single by Lynn and a one-run single by Bader.

Concord scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth to make it a 3-2 game.

Wesleyan extended their lead to 6-2 with Logsdon getting a two-run single and Bader collecting a one-run single.

Things fell apart for Wesleyan in the top of the eighth inning as they allowed five runs as Concord took a 7-6 lead.

Wesleyan put runners on in the eighth and ninth inning but was unable to chase across a run.

The Bobcats had 12 hits in the setback.

Jones had four hits while Bader had three.

Bobby Ornes suffered the loss in a relief role. He gave up two earned runs on four hits.

Wesleyan and Concord will play another doubleheader Sunday with the first pitch starting at 1 p.m.
