Lady 'Cats Lose Close One to Wheeling Jesuit, 13-10

BUCKHANNON – With first place hanging in the balance in the Mountain East Conference, the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats and Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals battled it out today at Cebe Ross Field.

In a competitive contest, the Lady Bobcats came up just short dropping a 13-10 decision.

The loss dropped Wesleyan to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in the MEC.

Wheeling Jesuit improved to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the MEC.

Wheeling Jesuit scored first just three minutes into the game, but Natalie Schaffner found the back of the net on a free position shot a minute later to even the score at 1-1 and Katie Kennedy gave Wesleyan the lead with an unassisted goal at the 23:29 mark.

Wheeling Jesuit scored the next three goals to take a 4-2 advantage.

Schaffner stopped the Wheeling Jesuit run with a goal at the 9:05 mark with Kim Lubic getting the assist.

That made it a 4-3 contest.

The Cardinals scored the next two for a 6-3 lead, but Schaffner scored her third goal of the first half at the 1:52 mark to bring Wesleyan to within two.

Wheeling Jesuit scored right before the half to take a 7-4 lead into the intermission.

Wheeling Jesuit recorded the first two goals of the second half to take a five-goal lead, at 9-4.

Lubic scored a nifty unassisted goal at the 21:31 mark and just 17 seconds later Schaffner scored her fourth goal as Wesleyan closed the gap to 9-6.

Wheeling Jesuit pushed their lead back to five with a pair of goals, but Madison Duvall scored two goals in a 30-second span to make it an 11-8 game with 13:43 remaining.

Wheeling Jesuit scored a goal at the 11:59 mark, but Caitlyn Baicar scored for Wesleyan 43 seconds later to bring the Lady 'Cats back to within three, at 12-9.

Neither team could score over the next eight minutes before Markie Wright put in a goal at the 2:52 mark to give Wheeling Jesuit a 13-9 advantage.

Hannah Antonelli wrapped up the scoring with a goal with 27 seconds remaining.

Lauren Granville made 10 saves for Wesleyan in the net.

Wheeling Jesuit owned a 23-16 advantage in shots-on-goal.

Wesleyan will return to action this Thursday when they visit Shepherd for a MEC contest.

The game will begin at 4 p.m.
