Softball Lady 'Cats Take Two From West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY – The 19th-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat softball team struggled with the West Liberty Hilltoppers in game one of their Mountain East Conference doubleheader today.

It took the Lady Bobcats extra innings to dispose of West Liberty, winning a 7-5 contest in eight innings.

Wesleyan cruised past West Liberty in the second game, taking it by an 11-2 score in five innings.

The two victories gave Wesleyan a 35-5 record overall and a 17-3 record in the MEC.

Anna Eggleston gave Wesleyan a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one with a two-run home run that scored Tori Pogue.

Eggleston had a one-run single and Krista Waggoner hit a two-run single in the top of the second to treat the Lady Bobcats to a 5-0 lead.

A two-run home by West Liberty made it a 5-2 contest in the bottom of the third inning.

West Liberty scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to deadlock the game at 5-5.

The game would go into extra innings as Wesleyan finally abkle to win it in the top of the eighth on a two-run double by Brooklyn Waddell.

Wesleyan had 10 hits in the contest with Eggleston, Waddell and Waggoner each getting two.

Sayaka Foley earned the win throwing 3 1/3 innings of relief.

She gave up four hits but didn't allow a run while striking out three.

In the second game, Wesleyan staked an early dominance in the contest with a five-run second inning.

Carly Gregory had a two-run home run, Ashley Hurey hit a one-run double and Eggleston hit a two-run single to account for the scoring.

West Liberty scored a run in the bottom of the second and the bottom of the third to close the gap to 5-2.

Wesleyan put the game away with a six-run fourth inning.

Pogue had one-run single, Eggleston had a three-run double, Rebekah Honce had a RBI ground out and Waggoner hit a sacrifice fly to account for the scoring.

Wesleyan smacked out 15 hits in the win.

Gregory and Morgan Bruce were each a perfect three-for-three at the plate.

Foley started the game and went four innings to record the win. She gave up two earned runs on five hits while fanning four.

Wesleyan will return to action this Sunday when they travel Wheeling Jesuit for a conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

That doubleheader will wrap up a 12-game road swing for the Lady Bobcats.
