Wesleyan's Season Ends With Loss to UC In Super Regional

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan softball team battled to the very last out today against the University of Charleston Golden Eagles in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Super Regional at Culpepper Field.

Wesleyan had to beat Charleston twice to win the Atlantic Super Regional championship.

They took game one behind a superior pitching effort from Sayaka Foley by a 3-0 score.

Foley pitched game two and tossed another gem, but even though the Lady 'Cats fought to the very end, they dropped a 1-0 decision.

Head coach Steve Warner and his Lady Bobcat squad ended the year with a 54-11 record.

Foley (19-3) was dealing in game one as she tossed a one-hitter while striking out 10.

Morgan Bruce put Wesleyan on the scoreboard in the top of the second when she hit a solo home run.

Wesleyan loaded the bases in the top of the third for Bruce who singled home Ashley Hurey and pinch runner Emma Rickels as the Lady 'Cats took a 3-0 lead.

Wesleyan let Foley do the rest.

Charleston's lone hit came in the bottom of the fifth inning, a one-out single by Allison Evans.

Wesleyan had 10 hits in the victory with Anna Eggleston, Krista Waggoner, Bruce and Sara Scoone each getting two each.

Alli Burdette suffered the loss as she lasted just 2 1/3 innings as she allowed three runs on seven hits.

Warner called Foley's number again as she was up to the task as she pitched a two-hitter in the final game.

The Lady 'Cats though couldn't solve Burdette in game two.

Burdette scattered four hits across the seven innings in the shutout win.

Charleston's lone run came in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Evans drew a lead-off walk, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Natalie Beck and scored on a single to centerfield by Jenna Evans.

Eggleston had two of the four Wesleyan hits.

Charleston, now 50-10, will advance to the Division II World Series in Denver, Colo.
