Baseball 'Cats Pick Up 2-1 Victory Over Salem International

BUCKHANNON – Mother Nature allowed the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats to get in one of their two non-conference scheduled games with Salem International today at Hank Ellis Field.

It wasn't pretty as the Bobcats mustered just three hits, but they pulled out a 2-1 victory in a seven-inning contest.

The win improved Brett Ripley's squad to 23-20 on the season.

The 'Cats grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when John Koon singled home Nick Jones (pictured) after Jones drew a lead-off walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by James Fraser.

Salem International tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second.

Wesleyan scored the game winner in the bottom of the fifth.

Jones started the inning with a single to right field, stole second base and then went to third on a wild pitch.

Jones then gave way to pinch runner Alex Skinner who scored on a passed ball for Wesleyan's second run.

Getting the three hits for Wesleyan were Jones, Koon and Greg Smith.

Jake Bishop pitched a strong five innings to record the win.

He threw five innings and allowed just one earned run on seven hits while fanning three.

Dillon Isom threw a scoreless sixth inning while Chris Metrick earned another save tossing a scoreless seventh inning.

The Bobcats will wrap up their regular season this weekend.

They will host Glenville State this Saturday with the first pitch slated for 3 p.m. and then visit Glenville State on Sunday with the first game starting at 1 p.m.

With every MEC team having four conference games remaining, West Virginia State has wrapped up the MEC South Division title.

Glenville State is in second with a 16-12 MEC record, Concord is in third with a 15-13 conference record and Wesleyan is fourth with a 14-14 league mark. If Wesleyan can take three of four from Glenville State, they will be assured a play-off spot regardless of any Concord results.

The MEC will take the top three teams from the South Division to the conference tournament which begins next weekend.
