CHARLESTON – The record books will always show the first basketball win in the University of Charleston's new Wehrle Athletic Arena belongs to the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats.

Charleston unveiled their new Arena today, but it was the Lady Bobcats who spoiled all the fun with a 70-67 win in a Mountain East Conference game.

Lana Long (pictured) led the way for Wesleyan as she scored 18 points while Tara Goldman recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Mari Stewart and Rachel Vandertoolen each added 13 points.

Wesleyan was down 15-10 with three minutes remaining in the first quarter but scored the final seven points of the frame.

Stacy Remer scored a lay-up, Stewart popped in a jumper and Vandertoolen uncorked a three-pointer during the run as Wesleyan went up by a 17-15 score heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter started off with a pair of Stewart free throws and a lay-up by Vandertoolen giving the Lady Bobcats a 21-15 advantage.

A Stewart jumper at the 6:48 mark gave Wesleyan their biggest lead of the opening half, at 25-19.

A Vandertoolen three-pointer kept the Lady Bobcats ahead by five, at 30-25, with 3:42 left in the quarter.

Charleston closed the quarter on a 13-4 run to take a 38-34 lead in the locker room at the half.

Wesleyan scored the first four points of the third quarter when Goldman and Long both made jumpers to deadlock the game at 38-38.

The two teams traded scores for most of the quarter as the game was still tied at 50-50 with a minute remaining in the third.

Stewart dropped in a pair of free throws and Long nailed a jumper to treat Wesleyan to a 54-50 lead going into the final 10 minutes.

Nursing a one-point lead with 6:52 remaining, at 56-55, Wesleyan went on a 7-0 run.

Remer knocked down a short jumper, Vandertoolen drained a three-pointer and Long hit a jumper to push the Wesleyan lead to 63-55 with five minutes remaining.

Charleston whittled the lead down to one possession, at 68-65, with 21 seconds remaining.

With the Golden Eagles having the ball, they missed a three-pointer but managed to grab the offensive rebound with four seconds left. Instead of kicking the ball out for a three-pointer attempt, Charleston put the rebound in with one second remaining, with Wesleyan still up by one, at 68-67.

Long was fouled with one second still showing on the clock and calmly drained both free throws to wrap up the game.

Wesleyan shot 42.6 percent from the floor as the hit on 26 of their 61 field goal attempts.

The Lady Bobcats were also an impressive 14-for-16 at the free throw line.

The win ended a two-game losing streak for the Lady Bobcats of head coach Vicky Bullett.

The Lady 'Cats are now 5-7 overall and 5-4 in the MEC.

Wesleyan will stay on the road this Monday as they travel back to the Charleston area for a conference game with West Virginia State.

That game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
