Vandertoolen Scores 26 as Lady 'Cats Beat Notre Dame, 75-70

Box Score

SOUTH EUCLID (Ohio) – The West Virginia Wesleyan women's basketball team scored the last 11 points of their game for a come-from-behind victory over the Notre Dame College Falcons tonight in a Mountain East Conference at Murphy Gymnasium.

Down 70-64 with 2:28 remaining, Wesleyan kept Notre Dame off the scoreboard while scoring their 11 straight, which mainly came from the free throw line for a 75-70 victory.

The victory ended a two-game slide for head coach Vicky Bullett's squad as they improved to 4-5 overall and 4-2 in the MEC.

Wesleyan fell behind early by an 8-3 score but a Stacy Remer jumper and a Rachel Vandertoolen (pictured) jumper brought the Lady Bobcats to within one, at 8-7, with 5:27 left in the first quarter.

Remer darted inside for a lay-up to give Wesleyan their first lead of the game at the end of the opening quarter, at 16-15.

The first five minutes of the second quarter were a disaster for the Lady 'Cats as they were outscored by a 15-4 margin and fell behind by 10, at 30-20.

Still down by nine with two minutes remaining, at 35-26, Wesleyan scored the last five points of the half.

Mari Stewart hit a basket from the inside and Brittney Allen downed three free throws to make it a 35-30 game at the break.

Notre Dame pushed their lead back to nine, at 46-37, but Wesleyan answered with a 12-0 run.

Vandertoolen went on an 8-0 run by herself as she nailed consecutive three pointers and then a two-pointer while Tara Goldman and Remer both made lay-ups during the run.

That gave Wesleyan a 49-46 advantage.

Notre Dame though closed the quarter on a 10-3 run to retake the lead at 56-52 heading into the final 10 minutes of action.

Vandertoolen started the quarter off with a three-pointer to bring Wesleyan to within one, at 56-55.

Playing catch-up for most of the fourth-quarter, Wesleyan finally caught Notre Dame on a Lana Long lay-up that deadlocked the game at 63-63 with 3:40 remaining.

Norte Dame outscored Wesleyan by a 7-1 margin over the next minute to push their lead to six, at 70-64.

The Wesleyan defense would keep Notre Dame off the board the rest of the way during their 11-0 run.

Vandertoolen started the scoring spree with a pair of free throws and then Long turned in an old-fashioned three-pointer after being fouled on her lay-up. That made it a 70-69 contest with 1:11 remaining.

Remer then dropped in two foul shots to give Wesleyan a 71-70 lead with 37 seconds left.

Vandertoolen had a steal on the next Notre Dame possession and was promptly fouled, which led to her making two more free throws to treat Wesleyan to a 73-70 lead with 28 seconds left.

Goldman yanked down a rebound following a missed three-pointer by Notre Dame and was fouled with 11 seconds remaining.

She calmly made both free throws to wrap up the scoring, giving Wesleyan their five-point win.

Vandertoolen led all scorers with 26 points to go along with nine rebounds.

Remer chipped in with 18 points while Goldman had 12.

Wesleyan shot 54.5 percent from the floor hitting on 24 of their 44 field goal attempts.

The Lady 'Cats outrebounded Notre Dame by a 37-27 margin.

Wesleyan will finish up their three-game road swing Sunday when they visit Wheeling Jesuit.

That game will tip-off at 2 p.m.
