BUCKHANNON – The West Virginia Wesleyan men's soccer team held off a pesky Concord University squad for a 2-1 win on homecoming weekend in a Mountain East Conference contest at Culpepper Stadium.
Wesleyan managed to get on the scoreboard first in the 23rd minute when Matthew Bentley (pictured) played a cross in front of the net to a wide open Juwon Akintunde (pictured) who buried it to the back of the net.
That 1-0 score would stand at the intermission.
In the 53rd minute of the game, Zach Whiting played a through ball to Conor Davies who beat Concord keeper Kyle Brown in a one-on-one confrontation to give Wesleyan a 2-0 lead.
Concord kept the attack on the Wesleyan defense and finally was able to break through in the 77th minute when Predo Bassin scored off a pass from Sam Ashton.
Concord continued to pressure Wesleyan controlling the possession in the Bobcat's side of the field, but they were never able to score the game-tying goal.
The Mountain Lions held a 16-10 margin in shots but Wesleyan owned an 8-7 lead in shots-on-goal.
Wesleyan keeper Cooper Zent made six saves in the victory.
Concord held a slim 7-6 margin in corner kicks.
Wesleyan was guilty of 10 fouls while Concord was called for seven.
The loss dropped Concord to 2-11-1 overall and 2-7 in the MEC.
Wesleyan improved to 8-4-2 overall and 7-2 in the MEC.
The Bobcats will step outside of conference play one last time as they host Seton Hill Wednesday at 4 p.m.
