Box Score SALEM – The West Virginia Wesleyan volleyball team held off a pesky Salem International squad tonight on the road for a 3-1 non-conference win.
Wesleyan took the first two sets in convincing fashion by 25-15 and 25-17 scores.
The Lady Bobcats let the third set slip by a 27-25 score but came back to hold off the Tigers by a 25-23 score.
Wesleyan was up 9-7 in the first set when a kill by Hannah King started a run of five straight points to give the Lady Bobcats a 14-7 lead.
A service ace by Alivia McDaniel sealed the deal for Wesleyan in their 10-point win in set one.
Wesleyan raced out to a 7-1 advantage following an Emily Doyle kill in the second set.
Salem International closed the gap to 10-8, but couldn't get any closer as Wesleyan outscored the Tigers by a 15-9 score the rest of the way
The Lady Bobcats had a chance to make it a clean sweep in the third set at match point at 24-23, but they couldn't close out the win as Salem International won the 27-25 decision.
Wesleyan took a 17-8 lead in the fourth set but had trouble putting the Tigers away.
Salem International outscored Wesleyan 13-6 to shrink the Wesleyan lead to 23-21.
A Leah Blend kill finally put away Salem International as Wesleyan won, 25-23.
Doyle had a team-high 13 kills while Blend 10.
Katlyn Buckland had a game-high 31 assists.
Alexis McCollum had a game-high five aces.
McDaniel had a game-high 20 digs while Doyle had eight.
The loss dropped Salem International to 7-22.
Wesleyan improved to 10-16 overall.
They will return to action this Friday when they host Charleston in a Mountain East Conference clash at 7 p.m.
