Wesleyan Loses to Shepherd But Earns MEC Tournament Bid

SHEPHERDSTOWN – A furious fourth-quarter rally came up just short for the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats in their road contest against the Shepherd University Lady Rams tonight in a Mountain East Conference.

Wesleyan was down by 21 points early in the fourth quarter, at 58-37, but outscored Shepherd the rest of the game by a 24-7 score.

The clock ran out before Wesleyan could take the lead, dropping a 65-61 decision.

Despite the loss, Wesleyan earned the 10th seed and final spot in the upcoming MEC Tournament following Concord's 54-36 loss to Charleston.

Wesleyan's only lead of the game came on a Stacy Remer jumper at the 3:51 mark of the first quarter. The jumper put them ahead by a 13-12 score.

Shepherd scored the next eight points before a Nicole Gilyard jumper ended the run to make it a 20-15 game with 51 seconds left in the opening quarter.

Shepherd took a 22-15 advantage into the second quarter.

A Tara Goldman lay-up made it a 28-19 contest, but Shepherd went on a 7-0 run for a 35-19 lead with 2:52 left in the half.

Wesleyan closed the gap to 13 at the break, at 35-22.

A Kambrie Bosley three-pointer brought Wesleyan to within 10, at 39-29, but Shepherd went on a 10-2 jaunt to open up a 49-31 lead with three minutes left in the quarter.

Shepherd took a 56-37 advantage into the final frame.

The Lady Rams started the quarter with a lay-up for their biggest lead of the game at 21 points.

Down 20 at the seven-minute mark, at 61-41, Goldman made a lay-up, Bosley hit consecutive three-pointers, Gilyard nailed a jumper and Susan Meyer went inside for a lay-up for a 12-0 run.

That brought Wesleyan back to within eight, at 61-53, with 1:25 remaining.

A Shepherd lay-up ended the run, but Bosley uncorked another trey and Meyer made a jumper to make it a 63-58 contest with 28 seconds left.

A Wesleyan foul allowed Shepherd to down two free throws to make the score 65-58, but Remer fired in a trey to make it 65-61 game with 13 seconds left.

Shepherd missed both of their free throws after a Wesleyan foul, but the Lady Bobcats turned the ball over on their final possession.

Gilyard came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points.

Goldman had a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Bosley ended the game with 12 points while Remer tallied 11.

Wesleyan shot 36.8 percent from the floor hitting on 25 of their 68 field goal attempts.

The Lady Bobcats outrebounded Shepherd by a 51-40 margin.

Wesleyan is now 6-18 overall and 6-15 in the MEC.

Shepherd improved to 14-15 overall and 11-10 in the MEC.

Wesleyan will close out their regular season Saturday at Glenville State.

That game will tip-off at 2 p.m.
