Koon's Walk-Off Gives 'Cats A Sweep Over WJU

BUCKHANNONJohn Koon hit a two-out walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give West Virginia Wesleyan a 5-4 victory over Wheeling Jesuit in game two of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader today at Hank Ellis Field.

The solo blast also capped off a sweep of the Cardinals as Wesleyan took game one by a 3-1 score.

The two wins improved Randy Tenney's club to 3-11 overall and started them off on the right foot in MEC play with a 2-0 record.

In game one, Wheeling Jesuit got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of third but Wesleyan countered with two of their own in their half of the third.

Koon singled home Griffin Roe and Ryan Kiser scored James Fraser on a fielder's choice to account for the two runs.

Wesleyan added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth when Eric Forbrick raced home on a double play ball.

The Bobcats had eight hits with Koon and Austin Keene each getting two apiece.

Jake Bishop started the game and with 6 1/3 innings to earn his first win of the season. He allowed just one earned run on four hits while striking out four.

Chris Metrick recorded the final two outs of the game for his first save of the season.

In game two, Wesleyan struck first with three runs in the bottom of the third.

James Fraser hit a one-run double, Koon had a one-run double and Dominic Castello cracked a one-run single for the scoring.

Wheeling Jesuit tied the game with three runs in the top of the fifth.

Koon singled home Hunter Rotarius in the top of the seventh to give Wesleyan a 4-3 lead.

Wheeling Jesuit scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth to deadlock the game.

With the game looking like it was headed to extra innings, Koon drilled a pitch over center field to give the Bobcats the walk-off win.

Koon had three of Wesleyan's 11 hits while Fraser collected two.

Metrick earned his first win as he pitched the ninth inning.

Wesleyan will return to action Tuesday when they host West Liberty in a MEC doubleheader.

First pitch is set for noon.
