Softball 'Cats Post Two Shutouts Against Fairmont State

BUCKHANNON – The one-two pitching duo of Hannah Vet and Sayaka Foley twirled a pair of shutouts today against Fairmont State in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at Culpepper Field.

Vet tossed game one and led Wesleyan to a 6-0 victory while Foley pitched game two in an 8-0 five-inning victory.

The pair of shutout wins improved head coach Steve Warner and his Lady Bobcats to 16-2 overall and 4-0 in the MEC.

Wesleyan dented the scoreboard in game one in the bottom of the third when Tori Pogue scored Aylin Gutierrez (pictured) on a ground out.

Wesleyan scored their remaining five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Gutierrez started the inning with a solo home.

Taylor Barnett and Pogue followed that with a pair of singles and Gore doubled to left field to bring them both across home plate.

Morgan Bruce doubled home Gore and Jessica Rodriguez singled home pinch runner Makayla McElwayne to wrap up the scoring.

Wesleyan had 11 hits with Sara Scoone going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate.

Pogue and Barnett each had two hits in the win.

Vet kept her record perfect as she improved to 7-0.

She allowed just three hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out seven in six innings of work

Foley pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

In game two, Wesleyan pushed across four runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Gutierrez hit a two-run single, Barnett had a ground out RBI and Pogue had a one-run single to account for the scoring.

The Lady 'Cats chased across three more runs in the bottom of the third.

Bruce had a two-run single and Rodriguez had a one-run single.

Wesleyan ended the game on the mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth when Gutierrez singled home Gore.

Wesleyan had nine hits in the win.

Rodriguez was a perfect 3-for-3 in game two while Pogue and Gutierrez collected two hits.

Foley allowed just one hit as she threw all five innings.

She upped her record to 5-1 as she didn't walk a batter and struck out one.

Right after the sweep, the Lady 'Cats loaded their vans and headed towards Wise, Va. as they play UVa.-Wise Friday in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.

They will visit Concord Saturday for a 1 p.m. league doubleheader.
