Softball Team Splits Games on Day Three in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 15 West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats split a pair of games on Monday against Felician (N.J.) and Findlay (Ohio) on their spring break tour of Florida.

The Lady Bobcats dropped a 5-2 decision to Felician but came back to down Findlay by a 7-4 score.

Wesleyan outhit Felician by a 9-5 margin but could only push across two runs.

Felician jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings of play.

Wesleyan made it a 3-1 game in the top of the fourth when Brittani Bible doubled home pinch runner Makayla McElwayne.

The Lady Bobcats cut the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the fifth when Olivia Gore doubled home Brooklyn Waddell.

Felician put the game away with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Waddell had the only multi-hit performance as she collected two hits.

Freshman Kayla Marburger made her first start of the year and went the distance.

She gave up just two earned runs on five hits while fanning two.

Felician improved to 6-4 on the season.

Wesleyan wasted little time in grabbing the lead from Findlay.

In the top of the first, Gore singled home Waddell to stake Wesleyan to an early 1-0 lead.

The Lady Bobcats pushed across four runs in the top of the third.

Morgan Bruce and Sara Scoone each had two-run singles during the inning.

That gave Wesleyan a 5-0 lead.

A solo home run by Gore in the top of the fifth upped the Wesleyan lead to 6-0.

Destinie Keeton hit a solo home run for Findlay in their half of the fifth to make it a 6-1 game.

Bruce doubled home Pogue in the top of the seventh to increase the Wesleyan lead to 7-1.

Findlay scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to wrap up the scoring.

Wesleyan pounded out 10 hits with Pogue, Gore, Bruce and Scoone each getting two apiece.

Sayaka Foley made her first start of the year and went six innings.

She allowed two earned runs on six hits while fanning seven.

Alyssa Shawgo recorded the final three outs of the game in the bottom of the seventh to notch her first save of the season.

The split left Wesleyan with a 5-1 record.

They will return to action Tuesday as they face Nyack and Assumption.
