Baseball 'Cats Lose 7-4 Decision to Ashland

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The West Virginia Wesleyan baseball team let their potential first win slip through their fingers today against Ashland in a non-conference affair in Florida.

The 'Cats led Ashland by a 4-3 score after seven innings of play, but gave up a pair of runs in the eighth and ninth inning and dropped a 7-4 decision.

The loss left the 'Cats with a 0-7 record.

Ashland improved to 4-6.

Ashland led 3-0 going into the bottom of the third, but Wesleyan scored three in their half of the inning to deadlock the game at 3-3.

James Fraser and John Koon each had an RBI in the inning and the third run was scored on an Ashland error.

Wesleyan took the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Dominic Castello singled home Fraser.

Ashland scored two unearned runs in the top of the eighth to take a 5-4 lead.

Carson Mittermaier hit a two-run home run for Ashland in the top of the ninth to put the game away.

Wesleyan outhit Ashland by an 8-5 margin.

Fraser led the offense with three hits while Castello had two.

Wesleyan pitchers gave up seven free passes in the game.

Ryan Giberson started the game for Wesleyan and went two innings earning a no-decision.

Jake Bishop was one of three relievers and he was tagged with the loss. He gave up two unearned runs on one hit while fanning three.

Wesleyan will return to action on Friday when they play Northwood at 3 p.m. and Chestnut Hill at 6:30 p.m.
