Softball Team Posts Two Shutouts Against Wheeling Jesuit

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BUCKHANNON – The 12th-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan pitching staff put up a pair of zeros on the scoreboard today as the Lady Bobcat softball team took two Mountain East Conference contests from the Wheeling Jesuit University Cardinals today at Culpepper Field.

The Lady Bobcats won game one 1-0 and then took game two by an 8-0 score in five innings.

In the first game, Sayaka Foley had to be sharp as the Lady Bobcat offense mustered just the one run on five hits.

Foley (10-3) was dealing in the circle as she went all seven innings and allowed just four hits while walking only one batter and striking out six.

The lone run of the game occurred in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Morgan Bruce started the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jessica Rodriguez.

Bruce scored on a single by Brooklyn Waddell.

Tori Pogue and Olivia Gore each had two hits for Wesleyan while Waddell collected the other hit.

In game two, Wesleyan's offense came back to life as Hannah Vet took the mound.

Fighting a weekend illness, Vet was her usual self in the circle as she pitched a three-hit shutout in five innings of work. She didn't walk a batter and struck out three as she improved her record to 14-2.

The offense used the long ball in game two as they blasted three home runs.

Wesleyan scored four times in the bottom of the second inning.

Taylor Barnett crushed a two-run home run over the left field fence that scored Brittani Bible and then Bruce hit a two-run single to right field that scored Gore and Pogue.

Wesleyan scored three times on two home runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Sara Scoone cracked one out of the park with the bases empty to make it a 5-0 game and two batters later, Waddell (pictured) crushed a pitch over the center field wall for a two-run home run that scored pinch runner Brianna Ross.

That treated Wesleyan to a 7-0 lead.

Wesleyan ended the game on the mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth.

With runners at second and third, Scoone hit a ground ball to third base. Wheeling Jesuit chose to record the out at first which allowed Gore to score from third base and end the game.

Wesleyan had 13 hits in the victory.

Pogue led the offense with three hits while Scoone, Krista Waggoner and Bible each collected two.

The two wins hiked the Lady 'Cat winning streak to five games as they now own a 30-6 record overall and an 18-4 mark in the MEC.

Wheeling Jesuit dropped to 16-18 overall and 10-12 in the MEC.

Wesleyan will back in action Tuesday when they host Salem International in a pair of non-conference games.

First pitch for Tuesday is scheduled for 4 p.m.
