'Cats Bow Out of MEC Tournament With Loss to Charleston

BECKLEY – The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcat baseball team saw their season come to an end with an 18-2 loss to the University of Charleston today at Beckley's Epling Stadium in the loser's bracket finals of the MEC Tournament.

There was no rally to be had this time by the Bobcats as they could never slow down the Charleston offense which had 21 hits.

Charleston scored three times in the top of the first for an early 3-0 lead.

They effectively put the game away with a seven-run fourth inning and they added three more in the fifth for a 13-0 lead.

Wesleyan got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth when Travis Renner singled home Ryan Kiser.

Charleston tacked on two more in the seventh and one in the eighth for a 16-1 advantage.

The Bobcats scored their second run in the bottom of the eighth when Nick Bader scored on a ground out hit by James Fraser.

Charleston wrapped up the scoring with two more in the top of the ninth.

Wesleyan had just four hits with Greg Smith, Kiser, Eric Forbrick and Renner each getting one apiece.

Wesleyan ended their year with a third-place finish in the MEC with a 23-30 record.

Shepherd won the MEC title after beating Charleston in the "if' game by a 13-6 score.
