Baseball Team Falls Twice to Glenville State, 5-0 and 5-2

GLENVILLE – The West Virginia Wesleyan baseball team's hopes of a Mountain East Conference South Division Title took a serious blow today as they were swept on the road by the Glenville State Pioneers at the Sue Morris Complex.

The Pioneers started the game in last place in the South Division, but earned the twin bill sweep from Wesleyan winning game one by a 5-0 margin and taking the second outing, 5-2.

With Concord sweeping a pair of games from UVa.-Wise, the Mt. Lions regained first place in the MEC South with an 18-12 conference mark.

Wesleyan is now 17-13 in the league (20-27 overall) while Charleston is two games behind at 15-13 as their Friday doubleheader with West Virginia State was pushed back to Monday.

The Bobcats mustered just two hits against Glenville State's Zach Sanford in the opener – a pair of doubles by James Fraser and Antonio Vega.

Glenville State scored twice in the bottom of the first inning and then tacked on one more run in the third, fourth and sixth innings.

Zach Henderson (2-3) suffered the loss as he started the game and went 5 1/3 innings allowing five runs on five hits.

In game two, Glenville State built a 5-0 lead after six innings of play.

Wesleyan scored their first run of the day in the bottom of the sixth inning when John Koon singled to right field that scored Greg Smith.

The Bobcats added their second run in the top of the ninth when Smith hit a solo home run.

Wesleyan collected seven hits in game two with Smith and Koon each getting two apiece.

The Bobcat defense was guilty of four errors in the contest.

Travis Perry (3-3) started the game and went four innings allowing two earned runs on seven hits while striking out five.

Wesleyan and Glenville State will continue their weekend series Sunday as the games move to Hank Ellis Field.

First pitch for Sunday's twin bill is set for 1 p.m.
