Box Score SHIPPENSBURG, (Pa.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan women's soccer team settled for a 2-2 tie today in their 2017 regular-season opener on the road against the Shippensburg Raiders in a non-conference affair at David See Field.
Wesleyan wasted little time in denting the scoreboard as Kelsie Hibbs scored the first goal of the season just 6:03 into the game when she redirected a long entry pass from Jennafer Algone into the net.
Shippensburg answered quickly though just 77 seconds later when Kelsy Fitzgerald tallied a goal.
Madison LaPole returned the lead to Wesleyan with a goal at the 30:58 mark of the first half after playing a ball from Audrey Barber.
Wesleyan took that 2-1 lead into the intermission.
Shippensburg tied the game at the 55:30 mark when Kat Hartner scored on a corner kick.
Neither team could find the back of the net in either overtime session. The two teams combined for just three shots in the OT periods.
"It was a back-and-fourth hard fought game," remarked Wesleyan head coach Patrick Holguin. "For the first game of the year, we played well at times and did somethings that showed promise. I thought overall our defense played well and our offense got some good looks."
Wesleyan managed to fire off 16 shots and put eight on goal.
Shippensburg amassed 15 shots and put 10 on goal.
Chelsea Hubner and Ashlee Schumacher split time in the net for Wesleyan
Hubner made five saves on six shots in the first half and Schumacher made two saves on three shots in 65 minutes of action.
The opener was a primarily clean game as Wesleyan was called for nine fouls and one yellow card while Shippensburg was guilty of five fouls.
"I was pretty pleased with how we performed," Holguin said. "The tie wasn't the result we were looking for, but we will learn from it and move on."
Wesleyan will return to action this Saturday.
They will open their home campaign against Slippery Rock at 2 p.m.
