CALIFORNIA (Pa.) – It took a half for the West Virginia Wesleyan men's soccer team to get things rolling, but once they did, the California (Pa.) Vulcans had no answer for the Bobcats as Gavin Donaldon's squad won a 4-0 decision at the Phillipsburg Complex.
In the season opener for both teams, the Bobcats and Vulcans played to a scoreless first half.
Wesleyan dominated the second half with four goals as they improved to 1-0 on the young season.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Conor Davies put Wesleyan on the scoreboard after he played a cross from the right side of the box by Hazuki Hashizume.
Five minutes later, Paul Smith gave Wesleyan a 2-0 lead when he found the back of the net on a penalty kick.
Matthew Bentley scored from 25 yards out from the top left corner at the 68:31 mark to treat the Bobcats to a 3-0 lead. Kevin Nyambi was credited with the assist.
Juwon Akintude wrapped up the scoring in the 82nd minute when he scored on a header off of a corner kick by Guillermo Rueda.
Wesleyan held a 19-4 advantage in shots and a 12-1 advantage in shots-on-goal.
Wesleyan keeper Alessandro Armenia posted the shutout turning away the only shot he faced.
Both teams were guilty of nine fouls but California was hit with one red card and three yellow cards.
Wesleyan will remain on the road against another PSAC team this Tuesday when they visit Shippensburg for a 4 p.m. start.
Shippensburg won their opener tonight by a 3-0 score over Goldey-Beacom.
