Soccer Bobcats Have Field Day in 9-0 Win Over Rams

SHEPHERDSTOWNJuwon Akintunde  (pictured) had three goals and six other players got into the scoring act as the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats rolled Shepherd University by a 9-0 score today in a Mountain East Conference battle at the SU Soccer Complex.

The nine-goal output was the most for the Bobcats since they defeated Ohio Valley by a 7-0 score back in October of 2012.

Josh Spencer started the scoring spree just six minutes into the game with a goal. Paul Smith was credited with assist.

Akintunde scored his first goal of the game five minutes later on a header off of a corner kick by Luca Falconieri.

Wesleyan wrapped up the scoring in the first half when Hazuki Hashizume tallied an unassisted goal.

Falconieri put away an unassisted goal in the 67th minute to up the Bobcat lead to 4-0.

Smith scored on a penalty kick two minutes later to increase the lead to 5-0.

Matthew Bentley got into the scoring act with a goal in the 71st minute with the assist going to Hashizume.

Falconieri had his second assist of the game after playing a pass to Guillermo Rueda who found the back of the net in the 74th minute to make it a 7-0 contest.

Akintude scored the game's final two goals putting one in during the 83rd minute and his last in the 87th minute.

Dominic Okus was credited with the assist on Akintude's second goal while Falconieri had his third assist on Akintude's final goal.

Wesleyan had 31 shots and put 16 shots-on-goal compared to Shepherd who had three shots and just two on goal.

Alessandro Armenia started in the net and turned away two shots.

Freshman Cooper Zent saw his first action of the season pitching a shutout in the final 20 minutes of action.

The shutout was the third of the season for the Bobcats.

Shepherd was guilty of 14 fouls while Wesleyan was called for six.

Shepherd dropped to 0-3-1 overall and 0-1 in the MEC.

Wesleyan improved to 3-0-1 overall and 2-0 in the MEC.

The Bobcats will return to action this Thursday when the host Notre Dame College.

The MEC contest will begin at 6 p.m.
