Wesleyan Drops 3-2 Contest to Regionally Ranked Millersville

BUCKHANNON – It was a battle between to top five teams in the Atlantic Region today when the No. 22 West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats battled the Millersville Marauders in a non-conference outing at Culpepper Stadium.

Wesleyan entered the contest ranked third in the Atlantic Region while Millersville was fifth.

Unfortunately for the Bobcats, they came up just short dropping 3-2 decision.

The Bobcats were forced to play catch-up soccer for most of the game.

Millersville scored in the fifth minute of the game when Marcus Frangakis scored an unassisted goal from the 18.

Juwon Akintunde (pictured) deadlocked the game for Wesleyan in the 26th minute.

He played a through ball from Dominic Okus and beat Millersville keeper Darian McCauley with a shot to tie the game at 1-1.

Millersville's Chase Flickinger scored from in front of the Wesleyan net in the 31st minute to return the lead to the Marauders, at 2-1.

Dylan Fogerty was credited with the assist.

Right before the half, Paul Smith played a pass from Luca Falconieri and scored to make it a 2-2 contest.

Jacob Gosselin had the game-winner for Millersville in the 71st minute as he scored from inside the box putting a shot to the far post.

Kody Eberly had the assist.

Wesleyan had 11 shots overall and three on goal

Millersville managed to get off 10 shots and put six on goal.

Wesleyan keeper Alessandro Armenia made three saves.

Millersville was guilty of 16 fouls while Wesleyan was called for six.

Wesleyan played their second regionally ranked opponent in the last four days as they beat No. 4 in the Atlantic Region Notre Dame at home last Thursday night by a 1-0 score.

Millersville improved to 4-0-1 overall.

Wesleyan fell to 4-1-1 overall.

The Bobcats will return to action on the road this Wednesday as they travel to Athens for a MEC battle with the Concord Mt. Lions.

The game will kick-off at 3:30 p.m.
