Volleyball 'Cats Fall Twice at Edinboro Tournament

EDINBORO (Pa.) – The West Virginia Wesleyan volleyball team opened their 2017 season Friday in the Rebich Investments Invitational at Edinboro (Pa.) University.

The Lady Bobcats went 0-2, after falling to St. Rose in the afternoon by a 3-2 score and then they dropped their nightcap to Davis & Elkins by a 3-0 score.

Wesleyan and St. Rose battled in five close sets – (27-25, 25-21, 23-25, 21-25 and 15-9).

The first set was a disappointing setback for Wesleyan as they led 19-12 but were outscored 15-6 down the stretch.

Wesleyan had a 12-11 lead in the second set but Saint Rose ended the contest with a 14-9 run for the win.

In the third set, it was Wesleyan's turn for a comeback.

The Lady Bobcats were down 17-13 but rallied to outscore Saint Rose by a 12-6 score for the win to make it a 2-1 contest.

The fourth set was another huge rally for Wesleyan. The Lady Bobcats trailed this time by an 18-11 score but went on a 14-3 run to earn the victory.

In the fifth set, Wesleyan jumped into a 4-1 lead after a kill by Leah Blend, but Saint Rose scored the next five for a 6-4 lead.

A Saint Rose attack error and a kill by Emily Doyle deadlocked the game at 6-6, but Saint Rose outscored Wesleyan by a 9-3 count the rest of the way.

Hannah King led the Lady Bobcats with 13 kills and 18 digs.

Ebonie Hicks had 10 kills while Katlyn Buckland collected seven.

Alexis McCollum had 11 digs.

Wesleyan lost in straight sets to Davis Elkins (25-18, 25-22 and 25-23.

Wesleyan never led in the first set against Davis & Elkins.

In the second set, the Lady Bobcats were behind 11-2 but made a push to close it to two at 23-21.

The Senators scored the next two points for the win.

The third set was a back-and-fourth affair as the game was tied at 23-23, but again the Senators prevailed as they scored the final two points of the contest.

Hicks had a team-high nine kills while King collected eight.

King had a team-high 16 digs while Hannah Bradford had 12.

Wesleyan will return to action Saturday morning as they face host Edinboro at 10 a.m. They will follow that up with a contest against Walsh at 3 p.m.
