Box Score ATHENS – It was a tough night for the West Virginia Wesleyan volleyball team as they opened their Mountain East Conference campaign on the road against the Concord University Mt. Lions.
They dropped a 3-0 decision – 25-18, 31-29, and 25-17.
Wesleyan trailed in the first set by a 7-0 score before a kill by Leah Blend put the Lady Bobcats on the board.
A kill by Hannah King brought Wesleyan to within five, at 14-9, but they couldn't get any closer as Concord pulled away for the seven-point win.
Wesleyan almost pulled off an epic comeback in the second set.
They were down by a 13-5 score but a service error by Concord sparked a 16-6 run for the Lady 'Cats giving them a 21-19 lead.
Wesleyan was at match point at 28-27 and 29-28, but Concord scored the final three points escaping with a 31-29 victory.
The final set was deadlocked at 9-9 but Concord rattled off seven straight points for a 16-9 lead.
The Mt. Lions went on for a 25-17 win.
Emily Doyle, King and Blend led the team with 10 kills apiece.
Hannah Jones and Katlyn Buckland each had a team-high 15 assists.
Hannah Bradford had a game-high 16 digs.
Concord improved to 1-0 in the MEC and 6-9 overall.
Wesleyan dropped to 1-1 in the MEC and 3-10 overall.
The Lady Bobcats will stay on the road as they face UVa.-Wise Saturday in a league contest at 11 a.m.
