Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lady Bobcats Grab Home Victory over Shippensburg

Thirteen-Point Second Half Comeback

Buckhannon, WV -- West Virginia Wesleyan Women's Basketball opened up their home schedule on Saturday afternoon. PSAC-member Shippensburg came to town, but they will leave empty-handed. Wesleyan made a thirteen-point comeback in the second half, and ended up winning 67-64 over the Raiders. The comeback was sparked by Junior Guard Brittany Stawovy's three-point shooting, and a collection of Shippensburg turnovers.

Stawovy shot five of six from beyond the arc on Saturday, and she totaled a game-high nineteen points. Senior F Nicole Gilyard supplied support on both ends of the floor, scoring eleven points, grabbing sixteen rebounds, and dishing out six assists. She has scored in double-digits ever game this season, and this was her first double-double. Stawovy and Gilyard combined to grab nine steals, many of which led to the Lady Bobcats storming back to take the lead. Freshman PG Courtney Wilfong chipped in with sixteen points in her first game at the Rockefeller Center. Anastasiya Karaivanova also provided defensive energy and rebounding off the bench in the second-half.

The Raiders were stymied by poor three-point shooting and turnovers on Saturday. Their leading scorer coming in, Ariel Walker, was averaging over 28 points a game over the previous two contests. She could not get anything going against the Lady Bobcats, shooting just one of ten on three-point attempts. The team combined to shoot 35.4% from the field, and 14.3% from behind the arc. The Lady Bobcats were also able to force them into twenty turnovers.

After today's result, both teams will move to 2-1 on the young season. Wesleyan will play one more PSAC school before the Mountain East Conference schedule begins, as they travel to Pitt-Johnstown this upcoming Wednesday. Shippensburg will play at Lincoln next Thursday before their PSAC schedule begins on Saturday.
