Lady Bobcats Top Wheeling on Senior Day

Buckhannon, WV-- The West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats would come into today's match-up against Wheeling Jesuit University with a 5-17 overall record (5-13) in conference. The Wheeling Jesuit University Cardinals come in today with a 4-21 overall record (2-17) conference record. 

Before the start of the game, we would like to thank and honor our seniors as this would be their last home game. Alexa Szelong, Tyra Hughes, and Mykenzie Martin are the seniors for the Lady Bobcats that were honored at half court with their families right before the start of the game.

After the pre-game festivities have came to a conclusion, it was time to kickoff the last home game for the Lady Bobcats. 

At the beginning of the game, the Lady Bobcats would be the first to draw blood as Alexa Szelong gets a layup on their first possession down the court.

With just 5 minutes into the game it would be a 6-6 ball game, as both team would struggle to find the back of the net. After the first timeout, the Cardinals would come out and apply pressure full court to the Lady Bobcats, as they would struggle finding a way to bring ut past half court. 

With the clock running down in the first quarter of play, it would be an intense match-up as it remains in a tie 13-13. At the end of the first, the Cardinals would be shooting 38.5% (5-13) opposed to the Lady Bobcats shooting 42.9% (6-14) from the field. The Lady Bobcats would be still searching for their first three pointer as the Cardinals would be just 1 of 4 (25%). Wheeling Jesuit would also be crashing the boards as they would be out rebounding the Lady Bobcats 11-6. 

With about 5 minutes left in the second quarter the Cardinals would take a double digit lead (27-17) as Khira Burton from the Cardinals would be lighting it up behind the arc. The Lady Bobcats will need to find a way to slow her down to keep this game from getting out of reach. 

The Lady Bobcats would start to get back in the game as Tyra Hughes would score on the following three possessions, however they still need to find a way to slow down Khira Burton as she has 20 of the 33 points for the Cardinals. 

At the end of the first half the Lady Bobcats would be down by 8 points as Brittany Stawovy would hit a last second shot to give some momentum to the Lady Bobcats coming out of the half. The Lady Bobcats at the half would be shooting 41.9% from the field opposed to the Cardinals that would shoot 46.7% from the field and would be shooting 41.7% from three, as they would catch on fire in the second half shooting 50% (4-8) from behind the arc. The Cardinals would also double the Lady Bobcats on rebounds (24-12), the Lady Bobcats will need to come out aggressive and crash the boards in order to overcome this deficit. 

The Lady Bobcats would come out with some fire in the second half, as they would cut the deficit to just 4 points with 1 minute left in the third. The Lady Bobcats would cause the Cardinal offense to force many passes resulting in many turnovers. At the end of the quarter the score would be 47-43 cardinals as the Lady Bobcats are crawling back into the game. Tyra Hughes would lead the Lady Bobcats with 9 points as they look to keep feeding her for more.

The Lady Bobcats would take the lead with 6 minutes left in the game as Alexa Szelong would drill a three, the following possession Summer Matlack would cut past two defenders to get the lay-up the make it 52-51. 

Brittnay Stawovy would hit a corner three two minutes left in the game to make it 57-51 Bobcats lead. 

Khira Brown would respond for the Cardinals with 5 straight points making it a 1 point ball game. Until Victoria Jackson would drive down and score the jumper. The very next possession the Lady Bobcats would collect the steal and Brittany Stawovy would hit the clutch jumper making it a 61-56 ball game with just 18 seconds left on the clock. 

The Lady Bobcats would go on to beat the Cardinals 61-59 to win their last home game of the year. 

The Bobcats players of the play would be Nicole Gilyard with 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists Summer Matlack with 8 points and 4 assists and Tyra Hughes with 9 points, 4 assists and 3 steals. 

The Lady Bobcats will be back in action Wednesday, 5:30 at Fairmont University.
