BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Wesleyan (3-9) women's basketball team fell at home to No. 3 Charleston (12-0) by a final score of 87-52 at the Rockefeller Center on Saturday, Feb. 13.
Leaders for WVWC
Abi Gabauer finished with a team-high 12 points.
Courtney Wilfong scored nine points, grabbed six rebounds and swiped three steals.
Malaika Kimmons nearly recorded a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
Brittany Stawovy snagged 10 rebounds and
Symphonie Bryant-Brown distributed four assists.
Leaders for Charleston
Brooklyn Pannell scored a game-high 34 points. Erykah Russell notched a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds. Dakota Reeves tallied 14 points (all in the second half).
Team Stats
Charleston shot 48.0 percent (12-for-25) from beyond the arc. Wesleyan finished 10-for-14 at the free throw line.
Inside the First Half
Wilfong stepped back and drilled a right side 3-pointer to even the score at 5-5 with 6:52 left in the opening quarter. A little over a minute later, Kimmons battled inside for a layup to tie things up again, 7-7.
After both teams exchanged baskets, Stawovy drilled a trifecta to put the Bobcats in front by a score of 16-15 with 1:55 to go in the first quarter. Charleston led after one quarter, 18-16.
The Golden Eagles extended their run to 8-0 after a trey from Abby Lee less than 30 seconds into the second quarter. Wesleyan answered with a
Taylor Dunbar layup as Charleston led 23-18.
At the 6:38 mark of the second frame, Wilfong buried another triple to bring the Bobcats within two possessions trailing 28-22. Charleston worked the ball inside and outside to create a double-digit advantage of 41-26 at halftime.
Inside the Second Half
Reeves took over in the second half for the Golden Eagles with six quick points capped off by an old-fashioned 3-point play at the 8:54 mark of the third quarter. Bryant-Brown found Kimmons on a wonderful pass for a layup and on the next possession, Bryant-Brown sank a pull-up jumper as the Bobcats were behind 50-34 with 5:34 left in the third.
Maple drained a 3-pointer and followed that up by laying the ball in with 3:25 remaining in the fourth quarter as the Golden Eagles were on top 77-48. Gabauer scored six points in the final quarter including a baseline jumper with 1:09 left to play.
