Bobcat Women Start Strong with Two Weekend Victories

The West Virginia Wesleyan College women's basketball team got its season off to a winning start at the Jim Crawley Conference Challenge hosted by Frostburg State University. The Bobcats defeated the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown 73-69 on Friday, and beat Winston-Salem State University 67-55, Saturday afternoon.

Four Bobcats recorded double figure performances against Pitt-Johnstown. Last year's rookie sensation Sydney Baird had a 5-of-12 performance from the floor for 17 points that included 3-of-7 three-pointers and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.

Senior transfer Lojain Elfatairy went 6-of-11 for 16 points. Senior guard Shelby Genes was 6-of-11 from the floor for 15 points that included three 3-pointers. Junior forward Emma Witt added 15 points on 5-of-9 from the field and recorded a game-high five steals.

Top performances in the second game came from Elfatairy and Bobcat senior forward Desiree Roy. Elfatairy recorded the team's first double-double of the year by burying a game high 24 points to lead all scorers and snatching 10 rebounds. Roy outpaced her defensive counterpart by racking up 11 rebounds to go along with her six points and two steals.

Baird nearly matched her teammates on the boards with 9 rebounds and 13 points. Genes added 14 points.
