BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – Jim Smith, one of West Virginia Wesleyan's most revered coaches, passed away Monday, February 17.
During his 36 years as a Bobcat coach, Jim was the head coach for basketball, cross country, women's and men's tennis, and was an assistant for the football team. He led teams to multiple conference and NAIA regional titles. His women's tennis teams participated in the NAIA National Tournament over four consecutive years (1987-1990) and during that time, he coached two Wesleyan Hall of Famers: Missy Bailey and April Phillips. In addition, he served as the chair of the Physical Education Department and Director of Intramural and Recreation Programs.
"He often talked about his former teams and players and how much he appreciated the cards and letters from former players and when they would be in town to drop in to see him," said current men's and women's tennis head coach
Kyle Hoffman. "One of the last conversations he had about the program was how he couldn't believe the program now has an electronic scoreboard and the team now played on orange courts."
Jim was also an athlete at Wesleyan. He was a standout sprinter on track teams that won conference titles from 1955-57. He set records in the 100-yard and 220-yard sprint. He was also a mainstay on basketball teams in the mid-50s that were coached by Hank Ellis.
"I am deeply saddened to learn of Coach Smith's passing," said Wesleyan's Athletic Director
Rae Emrick, "Coach Smith will always be a treasured Bobcat icon. He was a wonderful person, educator and coach that always treated others with kindness, encouragement and respect."
