PITTSBURGH, Pa. — West Virginia Wesleyan used a dominant second-half defensive effort to pull away from Point Park and earn a 65-46 Mountain East Conference victory Thursday evening at CCAC-Allegheny. The Bobcats improved to 12-4 overall and 9-3 in MEC play, while the Pioneers fell to 5-12 (2-10 MEC).
After a tightly contested opening half, Wesleyan clamped down in the third quarter—holding Point Park to just six points—and outscored the Pioneers 31-11 in the second half to secure the road win.
Point Park edged ahead early, but Wesleyan responded with strong perimeter shooting and interior toughness to keep the game within reach. The Bobcats and Pioneers traded momentum throughout the first half, entering the break tied 35-34 after four lead changes and five ties.
Coming out of halftime, Wesleyan flipped the game with energy on both ends. The Bobcats opened the third quarter with transition buckets and timely stops, building a 21-6 third quarter advantage. In the fourth quarter, Wesleyan continued to defend at a high level, limiting Point Park to just five points in the final period.
Emma Witt led all scorers with a game-high 21 points, adding seven rebounds, three assists, and four steals while logging 38 minutes.
Sydney Baird followed with 16 points on two triples, while also filling the stat sheet with four rebounds and a team-best seven assists.
Allie Daniels delivered one of the most impactful performances of the night, posting a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Daniels was efficient offensively (4-of-5 shooting), controlled the glass on both ends, and helped anchor Wesleyan's defensive effort throughout the second half.
Wesleyan also received eight points apiece from
Ana Young and
Kilah Dandridge, while
Kadie Colebank contributed key minutes off the bench, including five rebounds.
Point Park was paced by
Camille Fultz, who came off the bench to score a team-high
12 points on
6-of-11 shooting in 28 minutes, while
Kamryn Pieper added
10 points and knocked down a pair of three-pointers.
The Pioneers also received strong work on the glass from
Kiyana Larocque, who finished with
seven rebounds, and
Lucia Hervia, who contributed
seven points and
four assists.
Point Park shot
35.8% (19-of-53) overall and was held to just
11 total points in the second half, including
6 points in the third quarter and
5 in the fourth, as Wesleyan's defense pulled away late.
Wesleyan heads to Wheeling University on Wednesday, Feb. 4 for a 5:30 tip with the Cardinals.
