West Virginia Wesleyan used a dominant second-half surge to pull away from West Liberty, earning an 88–68 Mountain East Conference victory Saturday afternoon at the Rockefeller Center.
The opening half featured a back-and-forth rhythm, with six ties and six lead changes as both teams traded baskets inside. Wesleyan leaned on its efficiency early, attacking the paint behind Kiliah Dandridge and
Emma Witt, while
Ana Young repeatedly pressured the rim in transition. Despite the Bobcats shooting 57 percent in the second quarter, West Liberty stayed within striking distance, and Wesleyan carried a narrow 39–37 advantage into the break
Coming out of halftime, the Bobcats delivered a defining stretch. Wesleyan erupted for 27 third-quarter points, shooting better than 63 percent in the frame and forcing West Liberty into rushed possessions. Young opened the half with consecutive finishes before Witt asserted herself on both ends, scoring in the lane and controlling the defensive glass. A fast-break layup midway through the quarter pushed the lead to double digits.
That third-quarter run reflected season-long trends for the Bobcats, who entered the day leading the MEC in scoring margin (+11.4) and field-goal percentage (51.9%), while also ranking third in scoring defense (66.2 ppg) among conference teams.
Wesleyan continued to build in the fourth quarter, outscoring West Liberty 22–13 while closing the game at the free-throw line.
Sydney Baird steadied the offense with timely baskets and free throws, as the Bobcats shot nearly 88 percent at the stripe in the final period. Wesleyan finished the afternoon shooting 58.3 percent from the floor, well above its already conference-best average, and posted 50 points in the paint
Three Bobcats scored at least 20 points, led by
Ana Young, who poured in 26 points on 12-of-20 shooting.
Sydney Baird added 25 points on an efficient 9-of-11 performance, while
Emma Witt recorded 21 points, nine rebounds, and four assists in a complete all-around effort.
Allie Daniels anchored the interior with 18 rebounds, reinforcing Wesleyan's position as one of the MEC's strongest rebounding teams with a +7.9 rebounding margin in conference play.
The Bobcats dominated the boards overall, 39–19, including 15 offensive rebounds that led to 22 second-chance points, another area where Wesleyan ranks near the top of the MEC. The win improved Wesleyan to 14–4 overall and 11–3 in league play, keeping the Bobcats firmly in the conference title conversation
West Liberty was paced by Reagan Vinskovich, who delivered a standout performance with 29 points on 13-of-17 shooting, consistently finishing through contact in the paint. Anna Lucarelli added 23 points and seven rebounds, while Dria Parker chipped in key minutes off the bench. The Hilltoppers shot 46.6 percent from the field and generated 16 points off turnovers.
The Bobcats return to action Wednesday, Feb. 11 when the team travels to Concord University for a 5:30 start.
