Bobcats Battle to the Wire but Fall to Frostburg State in MEC Quarterfinal, 77–71

WHEELING, W.Va. — In a fast-paced Mountain East Conference Tournament quarterfinal, West Virginia Wesleyan traded blows with Frostburg State for four quarters before the Bobcats fell in a 77–71 heartbreaker Thursday afternoon inside WesBanco Arena. The contest featured five ties, seven lead changes, and long stretches of momentum swings, but a late fourth-quarter surge from Frostburg ultimately ended Wesleyan's postseason run.

Wesleyan wasted no time settling into the tournament stage. Less than 20 seconds in, Ana Young splashed a corner three, assisted by Dandridge, giving the Bobcats the first lead of the game. After Frostburg briefly surged ahead 9–5, the Bobcats answered with a 5–0 run capped by a Dandridge jumper and a Sydney Baird fast-break layup that put WVWC back on top, 11–10.

Young drilled her second three of the quarter at the 2:46 mark, and the Bobcats stretched their lead to 17–12 on Young's midrange jumper off a feed from Emma Witt. Frostburg scored the final bucket of the period, but Wesleyan carried a 19–17 advantage into the second.

The Bobcats controlled the early stages of the second quarter. Dandridge opened with a jumper, then knocked down a three at the 9:08 mark to make it 24–17, prompting the first Frostburg timeout. Moments later, Young buried her fourth triple of the game—this one from the right wing—to give Wesleyan its largest lead of the afternoon at 27–17.

Frostburg chipped away behind offensive rebounds and free throws, but Wesleyan maintained control thanks to contributions from the bench. Caitlyn Sullivan knocked down two free throws, and Ayla Hileman added two more at the stripe to keep the Bobcats in front, 29–23.

Wesleyan continued to pressure defensively, but Frostburg closed the half strong, trimming the margin to 34–29 at the break.

The third quarter brought the tournament intensity into full view, as both teams traded runs in rapid succession.

A key stretch arrived midway through the frame. Allie Daniels muscled in a layup, Frostburg responded with a fast-break score, Witt canned two free throws, and the Bobcats continued pressing forward.

But Frostburg's offense caught fire late in the quarter. After a series of lead changes, Young hit a midrange jumper, but Frostburg responded again, and the Bobcats suddenly found themselves trailing.

With 1:37 left, Julie Spinelli hit two free throws to give Frostburg a 52–51 lead. After trading buckets, Frostburg scored at the buzzer to take a 56–53 lead into the fourth.

In the fourth, Witt delivered a huge sequence—a layup plus two free throws—to bring Wesleyan within 61–59. But every time WVWC surged, Frostburg counterpunched. Spinelli answered immediately with a three, and Witt fired right back with one of her own, making it 64–62.

A series of traded scores pushed the tension higher. Nichols' three for Frostburg stretched the Bobcat deficit again, but Dandridge responded with a fast-break finish and free throw to even the game at 67–67 with 4:29 remaining.

With 2:00 left, Spinelli scored again inside, and after a turnover, Muha finished in the paint to make it 73–69. The Bobcats were forced to foul, and Frostburg converted key free throws down the stretch, extending the lead to six in the final seconds.

Witt added a put-back at :12 to cut the deficit to four, but Frostburg responded with two free throws to seal the final margin.

Ana Young led the Bobcats with 22 points, including 4-of-9 from three, while Kilah Dandridge added 18 points and six rebounds, and Emma Witt delivered a complete performance with 15 points, five boards, and three assists. Sydney Baird finished with 10 points and a team-high five assists.

Wesleyan finishes the season 18–7 overall and 15–5 in the MEC.
