Mott Gaymon is a highly respected defensive coach with extensive collegiate, professional, and international experience, known for building disciplined, aggressive, and turnover-driven defenses. He spent eight seasons as the Defensive Coordinator and Secondary Coach at Wheeling University, where his units consistently ranked among the top defenses in the Mountain East Conference.

In 2025, Gaymon’s defense produced seven All-Conference selections, highlighted by one All-American honoree, continuing a trend of elite defensive development under his leadership. Gaymon’s defense finished 3rd in conference in Rush Defense, Sacks and Interceptions. Since joining the Cardinals, Gaymon has sustained defensive success while also serving as the Defensive Coordinator for the Wheeling Miners of the National Arena League (NAL).

During the 2024 season, Wheeling held opponents under 30 points per game for the second consecutive year, allowing just over 28 points per contest and limiting six of 11 opponents to 30 points or fewer. The defense featured two First Team All-MEC selections, including middle linebacker Jack Parry, who set the program’s single season tackles record with 91 and led the conference, and defensive back Justin McIlwain, the team leader in pass breakups.

Gaymon’s 2023 unit allowed only 26.0 points per game while recording 63 sacks and 14 interceptions. The defense delivered a signature performance on Homecoming, holding West Virginia Wesleyan to just three points in a 58–3 victory. That season also marked the program’s first All-Region and All-American honoree, as Aaron Davis led all of NCAA Division II with 25 pass breakups. Three defenders earned All-MEC honors, including Second Team selection Caleb Grant.

In 2022, the Cardinals allowed 25.36 points per game and set a program record with 15 interceptions. The defense recorded the second shutout in school history with a 37–0 win over West Virginia Wesleyan and held six opponents under 25 points. Gaymon coached four All-MEC honorees, including First Team linebacker Jason Simon.

The 2021 season marked the best defensive campaign in program history, as Wheeling allowed a record low 21.7 points per game and earned the program’s first shutout victory. Four defensive starters received All-MEC honors. During the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Gaymon’s defense forced 11 turnovers and produced eight All-MEC selections.

Prior to Wheeling, Gaymon coached at NCAA Division II Lake Erie College and NAIA Lindsey Wilson College, helping lead the Blue Raiders to a No. 1 national ranking and an NAIA playoff appearance. He also served as Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator for the Wroclaw Panthers of Poland, guiding the team to a national championship appearance while leading the league in total defense.
