INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- West Virginia State pulled away from West Virginia Wesleyan in the second half to come away with a 45-25 win over the Bobcats on Saturday afternoon at Lakin Field.
An Aaron Ball 26-yard field goal before halftime pushed WVSU's advantage to 24-18 at the break, and Faustino Saucedo added a three-yard TD run to go ahead 31-18.
Sterling Dewdney caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from
Matt Vinson to get the Bobcats to within a score, but a pair of Yellow Jackets touchdowns secured the win for WVSU.
WVSU piled up 330 yards rushing and 617 yards of total offense in the win. Carl Garmon had 202 on the ground while Dant'e Jones added 102 more and two touchdowns. Saucedo was 18-of-30 for 287 yards with two passing TDs and the other on the ground. AJ Barrette had 127 yards receiving. Joe Stoneman led the way defensively with 10 tackles, including two for a loss with one sack.
Vinson had 249 yards passing and three touchdowns to lead West Virginia Wesleyan.
Shaq Freeman-Parks added 80 yards rushing.
