Buckhannon, WV- West Virginia Wesleyan Women's Basketball took on the Fairmont State Falcons on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats would pick up their second conference win in a row beating Fairmont 63-61.
Wesleyan would jump out to a 38-21 lead at the half led by
Alexa Szelong,Â
Tyra Hughes and
Abi Gabauer combining for 24 points in the half.Â
Fairmont would use the second half to battle back and would tie the game at 57 with 4:21 left in the game. Wesleyan stayed calm down the stretch and held on for the win.
"We played really well first half and of course I knew that they would make a strong run. We had zero energy in the third quarter and did not move without the ball very well. My starters have played a lot of minutes in the last three games and they have little time to recover. For us winning against two top preseason teams gives the team confidence that they can be competitive against anyone." stated Coach Bullett .
Eight people contributed to the scoring efforts for the Bobcats on the evening including three in double figures.
Summer Matlack would provide great play from the point guard position in the game for Wesleyan scoring 10 points, grabbing 5 rebounds, and dishing out 5 assists.Â
"
Summer Matlack was released to play after her knee injury last season and did a great job at the point position. She played like a vet. Holding off Fairmont tookÂ
pride and a relentless effort from the entire team. I'm so proud of them. They have to continue to train the mind like they physically train their body in order to trust the process of being a good team." Coach Bullett would add.Â
Wesleyan will back in action on Wednesday when they take on Uva- Wise at home.Â
