West Virginia Wesleyan Football will take the field one more time this season, on Thursday at Fairmont State. The Fighting Falcons will enter the final game at 4-5, the Bobcats at 1-9. Coach Testa and the Bobcats will be looking to grab a second win, which will mark an improvement over 2018's one-win campaign. All eyes will be on Thursday night's game, as it is the only one on the Mountain East schedule until Saturday.Â
Fairmont State has not had any trouble moving the football this season, as they rank second in the MEC in points per game (38.9), second in rushing yards per game (232.2), and fourth in passing yards (251.1). Their crutch this season has been a weak pass defense, which ranks second to last in the MEC, giving up 255.2 yards per game through the air. On offense, they feature a two-headed rushing attack with Sophomore Tyree Randolph, and Junior Khalik Hamlin. They rank fourth and fifth in the MEC in rushing with 839 yards and 755 yards, respectively. They are captained under center by Senior Takwan Crews-Naylor, who has twenty touchdowns and nine interceptions. He has developed strong connections with two talented Falcon receivers, Juniors Javon Hayes and Andre Hall. Hayes is third in the MEC with 834 receiving yards, and has seven touchdowns. Hall ranks fifth in the MEC with 627 receiving yards, and has six touchdowns.Â
Last Saturday for Wesleyan followed a similar script to the two weeks prior. In those past three games, the Bobcats have controlled the action throughout the first 55 minutes, but could not hold a late lead in the final minutes. Thursday can be when they put it all together, and play a complete 60-minute game. They have been playing well offensively over that span, scoring 74 points, and have jumped up to the fifth best passing offense under the direction of QB
Jarrett Northrop. They average 240 yards per game through the air, and Northrop has been spreading the ball effectively to a trio of
Kenny Lewis Jr.,
Derek Drapen, and
Devin Taylor. The running game has been inconsistent this season, but
Kord Jenkins and
Lawrence Brown have both had a handful of strong individual performances. The Bobcats are lead defensively by two of the best players in the MEC, Sophomore
John Merica and Senior
Aman Speed Jr. Merica ranks second in the NCAA with 68 total tackles, and is coming off a game against West Liberty where he made two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown, and recovered a fumble. Speed Jr. ranks third in the MEC with ten solo tackles for loss, and six-and-a-half sacks.Â
Fairmont State is coming off a Thursday night game last week, so they will have the preparation time advantage, and Thursday night experience. They clubbed regionally-ranked Urbana in that game, beating up the Blue Knights 31-7. Wesleyan will have to control the Falcons' high-powered running game in order to give their offense a chance. Whichever side can effectively move the ball through the air on a cold night will likely win this final game of 2019. A broadcast of the game will be available through Mountain East TV, and live stats through the Fairmont State Athletics website. The links will be provided by WVWC Bobcats on Twitter on Thursday, and can also be found on wesleyanbobcats.com.
