Lady Bobcats Fall in Conference Semifinal

Fairmont State Moves On to Face Concord

Fairmont, WV -- West Virginia Wesleyan Women's Soccer traveled to Fairmont State on Friday night for a Mountain East Conference Semifinal matchup. The Lady Bobcats were the number two seed in the South Division, and Fairmont State hosted because they finished as the number one seed in the North Division. The Falcons would take full advantage of the home turf, winning the postseason match 2-0, and moving on to face Concord in the MEC Championship.

This result likely ends a strong season from West Virginia Wesleyan, as they are still able to receive an at-large bid, but that event seems unlikely. They finish at 13-7 overall, and this match also snapped their seven-game shutout streak. Fairmont State moves to 13-4-2, and will now travel down to Beckley, WV to take on Concord for the MEC crown.

The Falcons got on the board quickly, when Cameryn Ciresi put home a shot in the eighth minute of the game, just as the fans had taken their seats. Her goal was assisted by Lacy Bryant and Ella Wilson. The match remained 1-0 until the 60th minute, when Abigail Johnson took it herself and scored the put-away goal to make it 2-0. The Falcons' First Team All-MEC Goalkeeper Taylor Kennedy was unbeaten on eight shots from the Lady Bobcats.

Wesleyan played aggressive for the entirety of the match, but was not able to have any success in the score column. Senior Madison LaPole left it all on the turf, fighting for every 50/50 ball, and putting all four of her shots on target over the course of the game. Unlucky for the Lady Bobcats, they put the same amount of shots on net as Fairmont State, they were just not able to beat Kennedy. This will likely close the book on many prestigious Wesleyan seniors' careers, including Goalkeeper Chelsea Hubner. She followed up a junior campaign where she led the nation in Save Percentage and GAA, with another strong season in her senior year, even keeping seven shutouts in a row coming into Friday. The Lady Bobcats will lose most of their attack for next season, but will return their entire back line of defense and midfielder Kayla Fay. The starting players who likely played their final match on Friday night are Madison LaPole, Shannon Shawgo, and Haelly Ramirez.

Fairmont State has a tall task ahead, traveling almost three hours to take on Concord. The match will be played at 1 PM on Sunday. Concord is ranked third in the Atlantic Region, and has only lost once all season. The Mountain Lions will come into Sunday at 18-1. With Wesleyan now out of the tournament, a new team will be crowned MEC Champions in 2019.
