Charleston, WV -- West Virginia Wesleyan Volleyball played their final match of the 2019 season on Saturday at Charleston. The Golden Eagles won the match in straight sets by scores of 25-15, 25-20, and 25-15. This closes the book on a difficult season for Wesleyan Volleyball, one that was rifled with injury, and learning experiences for many freshmen.
Over the second half the season, Wesleyan was forced to play a rotation made up of mostly freshman. As difficult as that made it to win matches, the 2019 season will likely be considered a stepping-stone season later on. Talented freshmen such as
Jenny Lundy,
Payton Hefner,
Abigail Anderson, and
Joelle Lalla were all able to learn in competition, rather than just practice. Lundy finished with 265 total kills, which will likely rank her in the top ten in the Mountain East Conference, listed along with many names that are juniors and seniors. She is undoubtedly a player to build the program around past 2019.
Payton Hefner tossed out a team-high 511 assists, and
Abigail Anderson finished seventh in the MEC with 33 service aces. Junior
Lauryn Antolock's eighteen solo blocks also ranks her fifth in the MEC at regular-season's end.Â
Coach Wheeler will rely on the development that this freshman class has received this season, senior leadership of
Lauryn Antolock and
Emily Doyle, and the return of many other injured Lady Bobcats for the 2020 season. Wesleyan Volleyball's recruiting class will be announced later on during the offseason.
