Baseball Gets Swept by Concord

Buckhannon, WV-- The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats would take on Concord University this weekend for four divisional conference game. The Bobcats come into the game with a 14-20 overall record and a 7-9 conference record. Concord comes into the match-up with a 19-9 overall record and a 9-7 conference record. 

Game 1:

On the mound for game one for the Bobcats would be Senior pitcher Hunter Rotarius out of Apopka, Florida looking to pick up the first win of the weekend.

The Bobcats would be the first to strike as Greg Smith would start the inning of with a walk, the Bobcats would play small ball as Alex Skinner sacrifice bunts him over to 2nd base. Antonio Vega would come up with 2 outs as he would double down the line to bring in Smith to score for the Bobcats to take the lead 1-0 in the top of the first inning. 

In the top of the 3rd inning, Greg Smith would start it off with a 1 out single up the middle as he would go on to steal second base as well. Eric Forbrick would step in as he would single to left field as Smith would come into score as the Bobcats take a 2-0 lead. 

Concord wouldn't take long to respond as they would put up 2 runs on 3 hits and 1 error as they game would now be all tied up at 2 a piece. 

It would be all the Mountain Lions from there as they would put up 4 unanswered runs in the bottom of the 6 inning, the Bobcat defense would continue to struggle as they would commit two errors. 

The Bobcat offense would be at a halt from there as they would leave the bases loaded to end the game 6-2. The Bobcats would be back in action shortly after the end of this game as they look to bounce back and take game 2. 

Game 2: 

On the mound for game two for the Bobcats would be Junior pitcher Griffin Roe out of Stewart, Florida looking to pick up the Bobcats first win of the weekend. 

The Mountain Lions would get on the board first as they would hit back to back doubles to make it a 1-0 ball game. In the bottom of the second inning the Mountain Lions would pu up 2 more runs on 2 hits and an error from the Bobcat defense. 

In the top of the third inning the Bobcats would answer with a run as Dominic Castello would start of the inning with a walk. Jonathan Cintron would then single to left field as the Bobcats have runners on 1st and 3rd with 0 outs. Greg Smith would hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring across there first run making it 3-1. The Bobcats would fail to capatilize in the rest of the inning. 

Concord would continue to put up runs as they pick up a pair of singles and a double bringing in 2 runs to make it 5-1. 

In the top half of the 4th Antonio Vega would hit a 1 out single to left field and later on steal second the very next at bat. Ryan Kiser would hit a 2 out ground rule double as Vega would trot around to make it a 3 run game. 

In the bottom half of the inning, the Mountain Lions would take a big lead and a momentum killer for the Bobcats as Concord would put up 5 runs on 5 hits to make it 10-2. The Bobcats would have to have a couple big innings in order to stay within distance from Concord. 

Alex Skinner would homer to left field making it 10-3, hoping to bring some life to the Bobcat offense. 

In the Bottom of the 5th the Mountain Lions would pull away even more as they would make it a 17-3 game as they put up 3 hits and the Bobcats would commit to errors as the game would start to become out of reach. 

In top half of the 6th inning the Bobcats would put up 5 runs on 3 hits as they would still have a long way to go as the score would end up to be 17-8. The Bobcats will be back in action on Monday at 1:00 and 3:00 PM as they look to split the series with Concord. 

Game 3: 

On the mound for game 3 would be Freshman pitcher Michael Maiolo out of Beckley, WV as he looks to take down the Mountain Lions. 

In the top of the second inning, Dominic Castello would lead off the inning with a walk and Ryan Kiser would single to right field, Nick Grotti would advance them both over on a sac bunt as Jonathan Cintron would score Castello on a fielder's choice to make it 1-0. 

Concord would answer with 1 run on 2 hits and 1 error as the Bobcat defense would continue to struggle this series. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, the Mountain Lions would put on 2 more runs on 3 hits and another Bobcat error to make the game 3-1.

The Mountain Lions offense would catch fire from there as they would put up 1 run in the bottom of the 4th inning and 7 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning as they would take a commanding lead. 

In the top of the 6th inning, Eric Forbrick would continue to swing the bat well as he would homer to bring the game to a 12-2 game as the Bobcats look to just scratch at the lead. 

The Mountain Lions would go onto win the game 12-2 as they would put 16 hits opposed to the Bobcats 3. 

Game 4: 

On the mound for the Bobcats in the last game of the series would be Junior pitcher Kyle Kania in his first conference start of the 2019 season. 

The Mountain Lions would strike first in the game as they would put up 1 run on 4 hits in the first inning making it 1-0. They would also put up 2 more runs in the bottom half of the 3rd inning to make it 3-0 as the Bobcat offense would need to get something started. 

In the top of the 4th inning Greg Smith would start things off with a walk and advance to 2nd base on a wild pitch. Alex Skinner would then single up the middle bringing Smith into score. Antonio Vega would later on single to the right side which would bring in Skinner to score as the Bobcats would be within 1 run. Nick Grotti would single to right field bringing in Vega to score as the game would be all tied up at 3 a piece. 

In the top of the 5th inning the Bobcats would take their first lead of the game, Eric Firbrick would single up the middle bringing in Greg Smith to score. Dominic Castello would later on d the same as he would also single up the middle scoring Forbrick making it 5-3. 

Eric Forbrick would hit a solo shot in the top of the 7th to give the Bobcats another insurance run to make it 6-3. 

The Mountain Lions would answer as they would put the 3 runs up they needed to tie it up and go into extra innings. In the 10th inning the Mountain Lions would score on an error to walk it off and sweep the series. 

The Bobcats will be back in action next weekend at Home as they take on West Virginia State in a 4 game series.
