Junior Guard Discusses Her Athletic and Academic Careers

After kicking off the first few basketball games of 2020, we wanted to talk to Junior Guard, Brittany Stawovy from Belle Vernon, PA. Stawovy, one of Wesleyan's top shooters, and student-athletes has explained her experience at Wesleyan as a student-athlete as well as how she deals with a struggling team record. She keeps her mind focused on life's lessons and stays involved in organizations she's passionate about.

Q: You've had a pretty successful season being one of WVWC's top shooters. During a game, what strategies do you use to stay focused and not over think your shots?

A: That's tough because I do find myself overthinking. Most of the time, I tend to believe that I can make the shots, and having my teammate's support also helps. I try to just stay positive throughout the game, and not let a missed shot get in my head too much.

Q: What has been your favorite moment of your career at WVWC?

A: That's hard, but probably making it to the MEC Tournament last year. That was really fun and exciting!

Q: Having an almost perfect GPA makes you one of the top student-athletes at Wesleyan. What are you studying and how do you balance that sort of time management?

A: I am an Education and English Major, and I really focus on making school a priority and using my time wisely. I really want to do well in the classroom, so it helps that I am already motivated in that area.

Q: Along with basketball, what else are you involved in on campus?

A: I am in a sorority on campus, Alpha Xi Delta. I am also part of the Student Education Association, Religious Life Council, and I go to FCA. I'm a member of a few Honor Societies, as well as a walk-in tutor.

Q: What was the biggest learning experience either in a game or the classroom?

A: I have learned that there is going to be failures inside and outside of the classroom, and that is hard for me to get a grip on sometimes. I have to realize that I am not going to make every shot, and we aren't going to win every game. I have learned that I must accept that and work hard and move forward. I have also learned that you can control your emotions on things and how you feel, so of things don't go your way, you can control how you react to that.

Q: Similar to last night, how do you deal with playing well personally but struggling as a team?

A: Personally, I don't really think I play that well, but it's tough and it hurts everybody. In a game, as close as yesterday's, it hurts to see us lose as team because we were so close and I see the hard work everyone puts in every day. It's tough to be that close and not come out on top, but we will keep working hard. It's not going to stop us, especially knowing that we can hang in there with good teams.
