West Virginia Wesleyan Acrobatics & Tumbling has been preparing for the 2020 season, their third year as a program. The team is looking to improve upon a season in which they finished third in the first ever Acrobatics & Tumbling Mountain East Conference Championships last year. Under two experienced and former Acrobatics & Tumbling athletes, Head Coach,
Alexa Johnson, and Assistant Coach,
Taylor Broadwater, the team has a great coaching staff to bring the team to new heights this season.
Â
Wesleyan's meet schedule is full of highly-ranked teams in the MEC, creating the opportunity to face good competition all season. With eight newcomers, and nine returning athletes, the team has made drastic changes in hopes to improve on last year's record. Multiple newcomers have versatile qualities and are willing to work hard where needed, which is a plus for this young team. Various freshman have stepped up in leadership roles, and adapted to the sport very well, especially with the help of the upperclassmen.
Â
Wesleyan's Acro, Pyramid, and Tumbling events have increased in difficulty and start values since last season, which increases their scoring potential. Their most improved event is Pyramid. All three Pyramid heats have some of the highest start values in program history for that event.
Â
Head Coach
Alexa Johnson's outlook on the 2020 season is, "With so many talented freshmen this year and several experienced upperclassmen I predict we will have a very successful season!" The Lady 'Cats were selected fifth in the preseason MEC poll.
Â
In national news, Acrobatics & Tumbling has been approved by the NCAA as an emerging sport effective August 2020 for Division II and Division III Institutions.
Â
Acro's first meet of the 2020 season is one week away, Thursday, February 6 at 6:00 PM at West Liberty. Live coverage of the meet will be provided by West Liberty on the MEC Digital Network.
