Yesterday morning, West Virginia Wesleyan announced the cancellation of all spring sport seasons due to the outbreak of Coronavirus, in order to protect student and community safety. As the day progressed, more schools and organizations joined WVWC in making the same decision. Around 4 p.m., the National Collegiate Athletic Association made the announcement that they would cancel all remaining winter and spring championships for the 2019-20 academic year. With this decision rendering no more national championships, it was then up to individual NCAA conferences to determine what would happen to their own championship seasons.Â
At 6 p.m. last night, the Mountain East Conference announced that along with the NCAA, they would be suspending all athletic competitions indefinitely. Currently on Friday March 13th, with all WVWCÂ spring sports seasons canceled, and all national and conference championships suspended or canceled, the only remaining uncertainty remains the eligibility of the athletes affected by these decisions who were not able to complete their championship seasons. In the coming weeks, the NCAA will need to make a ruling on this issue regarding their eligibility status, and the scholarship situation that would be affected by that eligibility decision. Any updates from the NCAA and the Mountain East Conference will be communicated.Â
