Fourth Quarter Sends Fairmont State Past Wesleyan

The visiting Falcons overcame an 11-point fourth quarter deficit to edge WVWC despite Brittany Stawovy's double-double.

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- Brittany Stawovy logged an incredible second half to earn her a double-double, but Fairmont State (1-2) soared past the West Virginia Wesleyan (0-4) women's basketball team in the fourth quarter by a final score of 80-75 at the Rockefeller Center in Buckhannon, W.Va. on Monday (Jan. 18). The game was originally scheduled to be played on Thursday, Jan. 7 and was rescheduled to Jan. 18 after Fairmont State women's basketball paused team activities on Jan. 6. 
 
Leaders for WVWC
Stawovy led the way with a team-high 22 points and pulled in a career-high 13 rebounds. Symphonie Bryant-Brown scored 14 points in the first half and finished with a season and career-best of 18 points. Bryant-Brown also contributed seven rebounds and six assists. 
 
Courtney Wilfong has contributed six assists in back-to-back games while Abi Gabuer added eight points and six rebounds off of the bench. 
 
Leaders for Fairmont State
Sierra Kotchman scored a team-high 22 points, ripped down seven rebounds and dished out five assists. Jalen Gibbs registered a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. 
 
Team Stats
Fairmont State outscored West Virginia Wesleyan 29-13 in the fourth quarter. WVWC had the 42-41 rebounding edge and outscored Fairmont State 42-36 in the paint. 
 
Inside the First Half
Nearly halfway into the first quarter, Summer Matlack drained a 3-pointer to put the Bobcats ahead 10-9. Bryant-Brown drove to the basket for a layup with 3:08 remaining in the opening frame as Wesleyan led 16-11. Fairmont State tied the game at 17 at the 1:25 mark but the Bobcats embarked on an 8-0 run to end the opening quarter, capped off by a Bryant-Brown steal and score in the waning seconds.
 
WVWC expanded its lead to 43-29 with 3:31 left in the half after a mid-range jumper from Bryant-Brown. The Bobcats controlled a 45-36 advantage at halftime. 
 
Inside the Second Half
The Falcons trimmed the deficit to 45-42 in the opening two minutes of the third quarter, but Matlack answered by connecting on another trifecta. Bryant-Brown placed a beautiful pass to Gabauer for the layup as Wesleyan took another double-digit lead (56-45) with 4:50 left in the third. Wilfong found Bryant-Brown for a smooth jump shot to close the third quarter leading Fairmont State, 62-51. 
 
With their work cut out for them, the Falcons cut the deficit to a single point at 70-69 following a jumper by Alyssa DeAngelo with 3:18 remaining in regulation. Presley Tuttle drilled the game-tying 3-pointer from the left wing to knot the game at 72 points apiece. 
 
Trailing 76-72, Stawovy swished a long trey from straightaway to bring the Bobcats within one as 14.4 seconds were left ticking on the clock. Fairmont State executed at the free throw line in the final moments and completed the comeback to win on the road.

WVWC women's basketball has another quick turnaround as the Bobcats play host to West Virginia State on Wednesday (Jan. 20) at 5 p.m. inside the Rockefeller Center.
