Gabauer Scores Career-High in Home Defeat

Abi Gabauer broke her previous career-high in points from her freshman season with a stellar 26-point performance.

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- The West Virginia Wesleyan (0-5) women's basketball team fell to West Virginia State (2-3) by a final score of 103-68 despite a career-high 26 points from Abi Gabauer at the Rockefeller Center in Buckhannon, W.Va. on Wednesday (Jan. 20). 
 
Leaders for WVWC
Gabauer bested her previous career-high of 24 points that was set her freshman year with 26 points. The senior also hauled in eight rebounds. 
 
Malaika Kimmons scored nine points and grabbed four boards. Courtney Wilfong scored seven points and added four assists. Summer Matlack distributed four helpers. 
 
Leaders for West Virginia State
Destiny Fields collected a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Payton Shears scored 15 points and connected on three triples. 
 
Team Stats
West Virginia State outrebounded Wesleyan, 55-43. WVSU attempted 89 shots and made 37. WVWC finished 16-21 from the free throw line. 
 
Inside the First Half
Kimmons converted a layup for the first points of the game at the 8:21 mark of the first quarter. Gabauer scored for the first time off a layup nearly halfway into the opening frame while the Bobcats trailed 10-6. 
 
Brittany Stawovy drained a mid-range jumper to draw Wesleyan within four again, behind 19-15 with 2:48 to go in the first. West Virginia State ended the first quarter on a 7-2 run. 
 
With 8:25 to play in the second quarter, Kimmons swished a jumper as the Bobcats trailed 30-19. A Gabauer baseline jump shot put the score at 43-30 in favor of the Yellow Jackets heading into halftime. 
 
Inside the Second Half
Gabauer went on a tear at the beginning of the fourth quarter where she made four consecutive field goal attempts. The Yellow Jackets answered every bucket and led 79-55 with 7:48 left in regulation after a 3-pointer by Kalia Cunningham.

After three consecutive home games, WVWC women's basketball is scheduled to travel to Charleston on Saturday (Jan. 23) for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
