Volleyball Preview: Charleston, Wheeling & West Liberty

Wesleyan will face Charleston at home before playing two road contests this weekend.

The Basics
The West Virginia Wesleyan volleyball team has three matches this week. The Bobcats will host Charleston on Tuesday (Oct. 26) at 7 p.m. Wesleyan will play two road matches this weekend versus Wheeling on Friday (Oct. 29) at 7 p.m. and West Liberty on Saturday (Oct. 30) at 11 a.m.

  • Lexis Tatum leads WVWC with 2.04 kills/set. Last time out, Tatum grabbed 17 kills versus Notre Dame (Ohio).
  • Makenzie Yates tallied 18 kills in nine sets last week.
  • Setter Payton Hefner accumulated her 300th assist of the fall season versus Notre Dame (Ohio). Hefner has smashed 27 service aces and ranks sixth in the MEC with 0.44 service aces/set.

Scouting Charleston
Charleston will visit Buckhannon with a 14-7 overall record and a 6-3 MEC mark. The Golden Eagles hold third place in the MEC South division.
 
Sage Bearnson's 3.83 points/set ranks sixth in the conference. Mckenzie Carpenter, sister of WVWC's Maddi Carpenter, has swung at a .329 clip, which is the second-highest in the MEC.
 
UC is led by Tyler Kanelos, who is in the first year leading the Golden Eagles.
 
Scouting Wheeling
The Cardinals hold a 17-5 overall record and an 8-1 conference record. Wheeling lost a five-set thriller on the road at West Virginia State last Friday (Oct. 22) night.
 
Karly Niesen leads the conference with 11.44 assists/set. Audrey Francis is the MEC leader in digs/set (6.77).
 
Christy Benner enters her 19th season at the helm of Wheeling volleyball. Benner guided the Cardinals to a national title in 2015.
 
Scouting West Liberty
The Hilltoppers have posted a 5-4 MEC record. West Liberty dropped a five-set match at Charleston last time out.
 
Madison Clayton leads the conference in the block solo category (22). Clayton's 1.14 blocks/set is good for the second-highest mark in the MEC.
 
The head coach of West Liberty is Riley Schenk. Schenk is in her second season leading the Hilltoppers.
 
Up Next
Bobcat volleyball is scheduled to travel to Athens, W.Va., for a match versus Concord on Nov. 2 and is set to welcome West Virginia State to Buckhannon on Nov. 5.
